Possibly her entire face. She could feel every inch of her body at once, too aware of the way her puffy gown pulled at her collarbone, the sudden flush rising up her neck, the strange, terrifying thrill that shot through her spine and made her want to run and scream and stay forever. She clutched her hands tighter. “Ellara, please—this isn’t—what’s happening?” Ellara looked up, and her voice, gods, her voice, was rough with urgency. “Selene,” Ellara said, her voice low, too close.

“Please listen to me. This isn’t a game. You’re in danger.” Selene stared. She couldn’t help but stare. Her pupils probably looked ridiculously wide. Her ears were flushed red, she was sure. Her brain was doing things that had nothing to do with politics. Gods, her mouth was dry. “I don’t—what—” Ellara leaned in slightly, just enough that her breath was soft against Selene’s skin. “I’m not saying this to frighten you. I’m saying it because I need you to hear me before it’s too late.”

Selene swallowed. Tried to. Her throat had turned to ash. “Ellara, you’re—what are you talking about?” “The Sunborn Elven kingdom,” Ellara said. Her hands were still on Selene’s face. Gentle. Steady. “They don’t want a queen. They want access. To the canal. To your lands.” Selene blinked, hard. “The—what?” “The sea canal,” Ellara continued.

“It runs straight through your territory. And it leads to the Moonborn mountains. That’s the only way to reach the Moonborn Elven kingdom.” “What? But they’re helping us with the orcs, they’re—” “Little dove, I had a spy travel through their kingdom,” she said. “He returned last night. I’ve spent hours verifying what he found.

And it’s worse than I imagined.” The queen exhaled. The sound was rough. She then continued. “The Sunborn Elves are not simply arrogant isolationists, Selene. They’ve been building a plan for years. Maybe longer. Aeryn’s kingdom has established a hidden alliance with the orcs.” Selene blinked. “That’s not possible. The orcs have been—” “They’re being used,” Ellara interrupted.

“Bought. Bound by rites, promises, and debts. The orcs don’t march for glory. They march because the Sunborns are holding the leash.” Selene went still. Ellara continued.

The grand halls of Eldórea’s palace shimmered under the glow of chandeliers, the candlelight dancing on the princess’s golden-brown skin.

“What do you mean I’m being married off? Why? When? To whom?” Selene asked, her voice rising, green eyes wide in disbelief as she stared at her parents. The queen sighed and met her daughter’s gaze. “You’re going to get married to Prince Aeryn of the Sunborn Elves,” Queen Portia said, her tone clipped as if it were the most natural thing in the world. Selene’s heart raced, her mind struggling to keep up.

“Prince Aeryn? Are you for real? You’re going to marry me off to some elven prince? Sunborn Elves hate humans!” She put her cutlery down and stood up, hands trembling. “No… no, no, you can’t be serious. This is a joke, right?” She turned to her father then, “Please, tell me it’s a joke.” King Ferdinand leaned forward, his voice low and commanding. “It’s not a joke. The orcs have been showing signs we can’t ignore. There may be a war on the horizon, and an alliance with the Sunborn elves could not only solidify our position in the region but also protect us if anything happens.

This marriage will secure your future, our future. You should be honored.” “Honored?” Selene felt a knot tighten in her throat. “I’ve always done my best to honor the crown, but you can’t just ask me to accept this like it’s not life-changing!” She turned to her mother, searching her face for any trace of compassion.

“Please, you’re already forcing Nicolas into marriage with the Allindivean princess. Isn’t their kingdom enough of an alliance?” The queen drew in a slow breath. The king closed his eyes, just for a moment, as if trying to smother his annoyance. “Enough, Selene.” He said, opening his eyes again, “This isn’t up for debate. You will marry him, and you will do your duty.
