As far as David could tell, Sisters were senior succubi, while those like Iris and Salara were novices, who hadn’t gained the rank of Sister. There weren’t any male succubi to be found, and he supposed that only female demons were capable of becoming succubi. They walked straight out of the baths, still unclothed, before heading towards the temple’s interior. David’s eyes widened as he watched two Sisters lead in a group of people from the temple’s entrance in a long train.

They wore tattered clothes, and the stench as they entered the temple was palpable. David was standing beside Iris, while Aika and Miki were attending to a line of people opposite him, wearing malicious smiles as they stared at him. “It may be difficult, but try not to make a face,” Iris said gently. “They can tell how we react. Do you know why we bathe before we serve them?” That wasn’t why I was making a face.

It has everything to do with the look Aika and Miki are giving me right now. He drew himself out of his thoughts, forcing himself to consider her question. “Why we bathe before we serve them… dignity? To ensure that we approach our duties by bringing the best of ourselves to them? Doing so respects their dignity.” “Wonderful. That’s it exactly.” Iris pushed a stray lock of hair out of the way as she smiled.

The temple entrants were crouched at regular intervals along the water’s edge. An elderly male demon halted in front of him. The old man had curled into himself, uncertainly casting glances back at David as if he was afraid. “Here,” Iris said softly, walking towards him. She laid a single, soft hand on the man’s back.

“Do not be afraid. We are not here to judge, but to serve.” To David’s surprise, he watched as the man’s tension drained from him. He realised that the elderly women Iris and Salara were attending to were similarly relaxed. Wait a minute… Is she using her powers? Recognising the surprise that must have shown on David’s face, Iris smiled. “Succubi are known mainly for their ability to twist the wills of non-demon men, but we have so much more to offer,” Iris whispered. “The powers of truth and calming are in our grasp, and we are capable of extending those without such limitations.”

Iris smiled at David, nodding encouragingly at him. He dipped his sponge into the water, before gently scrubbing the elderly man’s back. As he did so, the image of his grandmother returned to him unbidden. He felt a painful lump well in his throat before he swallowed it down, blinking the tears from his eyes. Then, to his surprise, he felt a comforting sensation settle across his mind like a warm blanket on a winter’s day. He blinked, before staring at Iris who simply winked back at him.

“What do you know about demons?” Grandmother Aela was seated in her rocking chair. Her hands rhythmically attended to the tangled mess that was her ball of wool. They were a blur, moving at a speed that none of the village seamstresses could imitate, but with none of their grace. She steadily continued to knit the monstrosity of a sock as David watched on. The boy of sixteen was smart. The best of both of his parents. The best of her, though she would never admit it out loud.

Still, he had a long way to go. His curiosity about the world beyond their humble of village of Trolth was painfully obvious. He only had two years of his schooling left, and Aela could already see him counting the days. Spending his nights in her library. Systematically dissecting her texts and hungrily consuming the knowledge they contained about the Continent and the Infinite Dungeon. Aela could see it in his hazel eyes.

In the way that he leaned on her every word. David knew that she had once been a skilled adventurer. He had watched her cleave apart monsters that had approached their village. He witnessed the ease with which she tore through creatures far beyond the ability of the village guards to deal with. Her grandson was desperate for more. To piece together the precise details of her adventures. She could hardly blame him.

She would do the same in his shoes. But she could hardly make things too easy for him. She had a reputation to maintain, after all. Grandmother Aela’s lips widened into a visceral grin. “I know what you’re trying to do, boy.” David watched on innocently as his grandmother’s lips twisted into a cunning grin that would have made the village elders blanch. “You think you’re smart. But there is much that you have to learn about women and the world.

We both have our mysteries, and we both have our pride. You would do well to remember that we do not so easily divulge our secrets. You will have to work for mine, just as you will have to for the Infinite Dungeon’s.” Aela chuckled as David frowned, his shoulders shrinking imperceptibly. “And so will you for the demons’ secrets.

But I’m feeling generous today. Ask.”
