Italy Can Bite Me – MeLisa Ryun

They dive into desire like it’s a perfectly temperature-controlled pool while I’m here awkwardly checking the pH balance. My fingers shake as I type. For once, I want to be reckless. I want something that makes my heart race, my skin buzz, and shuts down my brain’s habitual reruns of worst-case scenarios. Me: Better hurry back. The vineyard isn’t the same without someone making inappropriate grape innuendos.
Italian Stallion: Careful, principessa. Keep talking like that and I’ll think you want me to be inappropriate. Me: Maybe I do. I hit Send before I can overthink it. For the first time in my life, I want to be the woman who takes what she wants. Now I just need to make him break his rule. OceanofPDF.com CAN WE GET TO the part where I climax? The buildup is killing me. This is what my life has come to—sitting at a gorgeous Italian dinner party thinking about orgasms.
Not just any orgasms. Specifically the kind I want Matteo Monti to give me. Repeatedly. In various positions. Preferably while speaking Italian. I should be soaking up every magical detail of Enrico and Caterina’s backyard, not daydreaming about my tour guide returning and whispering naughty promises against my neck.
I force myself to pay attention, like a good event planner should. String lights crisscross overhead, creating a constellation of tiny stars. Rustic wooden tables stretch out endlessly, covered in linens so white they’re judging my impure thoughts. Weathered wine barrels serve double duty as cocktail stations, complete with mason jars filled with flickering candles. Even the setting sun feels like foreplay, caressing the vineyard with fingers of gold that make me think of other kinds of touching. The air is thick with the aroma of enough Italian food to feed a small army.
Platters of handmade pasta glisten with olive oil, and fresh herbs have been scattered on the tables like edible confetti. The vineyard workers and seniors have merged into one big, happy, wine- soaked family—sharing stories between bites of pecorino and prosciutto. Mrs. Thomas is glowing as she chats with a volunteer from her hometown in Michigan. “Your grandmother owns Romano’s Deli? I eat there every Sunday after church!” I wonder how these tablecloths would feel against my back if he took me right here? Oh yeah, gone is Katie Crawford, Professional Event Planner Who Has Her Shit Together.
My brain keeps glitching to one thought: MatteoMatteoMatteoMatteo. And then he appears.

With every crooked envelope Petra stuffs, I squeeze tighter. The dining room table—Jared’s precious antique mahogany—is a war zone of calligraphy pens, address labels, and ninety-seven wedding invitations. My best friend seems hell-bent on destroying each cream-colored tissue insert. Her weapons of choice? Neglect and clumsy fingers. This is what I get for thinking I could wrangle Petra “Chaos Is My Kink” Brinkman into conforming to my wedding standards.
We’re talking about the girl who turned her art history final into a radical, all-nude slideshow because—and I quote—“art should challenge the system.” I release my death grip and adjust my sensible button-down blouse. It’s the blue one with tiny pink flowers that Jared loves and Petra calls my “sexy hall monitor” look. I’ve tied my golden-blonde hair into what I call a CHAPTER ONE KATIE tactical ponytail, held by three hair ties—because backup plans should always have backup plans.
It’s not paranoia, it’s preparation. There’s a difference. Sign. Seal. Stamp. Another invitation goes on the stack. “For the love of all things laminated, what are you doing?” I lunge across the table to stop Petra as she attempts the next envelope assassination.
