I Fly Spaceships Book One – Rob Baddorf (1)

Chunks of wall and ceiling material continued to explode around them. The elevator doors closed. Silence. The sounds of shooting and destruction were now little more than muffled wump-wumps outside. Relaxing music played over the speaker mounted on the ceiling. Neither Lucas nor Daniel said anything. Lucas coolly pulled out a belt and holster from his backpack and strapped them around his waist.
Daniel watched the numbers on the display screen climb. “So, you fly spaceships, huh? Who would have guessed?” “Yuuup.” Daniel switched his weight from one other leg to the other. His foot tapped out a fast beat. Lucas unzipped his backpack and held out the empty water bottle again. “Thank you!” *** The elevator doors opened. Lucas and Daniel stepped out onto the top floor. With their guns at the ready, they advanced, scanning for guards. It was eerily empty. Quiet. Had the whole building been cleared?
Piles of paper cascaded across the floor. A plant lay on its side, the pot cracked and dirt spilled out in a pile. Everything abandoned. Lucas held up his wristwatch and whispered, “Hey, Miriam, you there?” A gentle computer voice spoke in their headsets. “Yes, Mr. Lucas. I’ve been waiting for your call.” “Um, we’d like to act like a tree and go.” “Roger that, Mr. Lucas. I am on my way.”
“No, you didn’t get it,” Lucas whispered. “It’s leave, Miriam. I was supposed to say leave. Don’t you get—” A noise rang out from somewhere up ahead. A scratching sound. Lucas and Daniel stopped. Their guns trained forward. Something or someone was definitely ahead of them. The sound had come from several rooms farther in. Was it the ambassador? But why would he have come out of his hiding spot? Wouldn’t he wait for Lucas to return? Daniel didn’t like it.
His gut told him something was wrong. His heart rate began to speed up. “Miriam,” Lucas whispered, “why should you never trust a set of stairs?” There was a moment of silence. “I’m sorry, Mr. Lucas. I don’t understand your question.” There it was again! There was no mistaking it. It was the sound of a rifle being cocked! Daniel tried to steady his hand.

Everything that had survived the terrible fire fit into one suitcase. He stood clutching it tight enough to make his knuckles white.
He didn’t know what to say. “Daniel, you remember your cousin, Lucas?” Mother beamed. “Hi.” “Hi.” The boys stood staring at each other. Neither one knew where to take the conversation, so instead they turned their eyes away. Their attention focused on the adults. “I can’t tell you how sorry we are,” Lucas’s mom said, holding Mother’s hands. “You poor thing. I can’t begin to imagine what you must be going through. It’s just terrible.” “Thank you.
