Lavender Bay: A Dark Rockstar Romance – D. Oak, Rachel

It’s just that the compliments I have in mind for you are better left in my thoughts. – I boop his nose. – Wouldn’t want to make Sophia jealous. Dustin shakes his head, ignoring my choice of nickname. – I didn’t know you started doing crack in the morning, but keep it up ‘cause I enjoy the good mood.
Jake exhales, opening the door to the room that holds their musical equipment, his way of saying “Enough of this, let’s get to work”. The others follow suit while I sit in an armchair next to the studio monitors and audio interface. I settle on reading a fanfic on my phone, trying not to squeal and fling my phone across the room when something exciting happens, which is easier said than done.
Mostly, I school my expression to a goofy grin, that is until I get to a particularly flaming character descriptor. Knowing damn well I can’t behave if I read any further, I bury my phone in my back pocket, hoping the word ‘sexican’ will stop ringing in my ears. I watch the four of them play, beads of sweat on their foreheads, body language shifting from hyper-focused to ecstatic depending on the song.
They play for quite some time, adjusting specific chords and intro times, occasionally discussing the set list and whether Dustin needs to switch guitars. Jake’s vocals start to get a bit rough, and although he’s eager to continue, Dustin is adamant about taking a break. Elated after what I witnessed, I insist on taking a photo of their first rehearsal.
They think I’m being silly, though I’m quick to remind them that it’s the first time I’ve ever seen them play; I want to capture the moment. That manages to win them over. In the middle of them acting like goofballs, I succeed in getting a single photo that isn’t shaky. I zoom in on the picture, scrutinizing each of them. They display wide cheesy grins. For Carlton that entails crinkling his nose, his eyes barely open, while Asher’s hands are around his waist.
The latter smiles straight at the camera with adorable dimples that are impossible to ignore. Dustin is relaxed on the edge of the frame, a row of his upper teeth peeking through. He stands unusually straight yet his hand is behind Jake, giving the other bunny ears. Jake leans to the left, hands shoved in his front pockets, nothing but a non-committal smile, fitting to his reputation.
Despite the light-hearted conversation going around me, I can’t help feel a misplaced sense of loss as I stare at the picture. As if I’m losing something I’ve barely had a chance to hold.
