A Deadly Christmas – Francine Pascal

Jessica nodded slowly. “I see what you mean.” “I’m just not ready to do that,” said Elizabeth. “Gosh, when Mom and Dad find out what Sue’s been up to… !” “They’ll feel so betrayed,” Jessica anticipated. “They might not even believe it. I mean, let’s face it—they’re pretty sympathetic to Sue, and I’ve been in the doghouse lately.
They’d probably think I made it all up to smear Sue.” “T still don’t know what to think myself,” said Elizabeth, twisting a strand of her silky blond hair. “I mean, I like Sue. We were friends—at least I thought we were. I just don’t understand how she could get involved in something like this—and with someone like Jeremy. If Jeremy’s as bad as she says, that is. I mean, she’s not stupid—she’s a smart girl. Why would she go along with him? Is she a bad person, is she just lonely, or boy crazy, or spineless and impressionable, or what?”
Boy crazy, spineless, impressionable . . . sounds a lot like me, Jessica thought, making a wry face. “I guess she’s just greedy. She wants to get that money back.” “I was so mad at her when you told me about this last night,” related Elizabeth, “but now . She sighed heavily.
“The fact that Sue came to you shows she’s not totally selfish. It shows that she’s started to realize she’s making a huge mistake. I feel sorry for her in a way. She’s backed herself into a comer with Jeremy—clearly she’s unhappy.” “So what do you think we should do?” Jessica asked somewhat impatiently. She personally thought it was a waste of time and energy to feel sorry for Sue.
“Wait until eras) and call Sam again?” “T don’t think we can afford to wait,” said Elizabeth grimly. “If it were just Sue . . . She’s trapped—she can’t make a move until she’s sure the money is hers. But I think Jeremy Randall is a dangerous person. We’ll have to go to the police with the story Sue told you.” “They’ll never believe it,” predicted Jessica.
Jeremy kissed Jessica long and hard on the mouth. Clearly he felt like she was in his power and he could do whatever he wanted with her. She tried her hardest to fake some enthusiasm, and Jeremy didn’t seem to suspect anything. A mo- ment later he drew back from her. “You stay right here and make yourself comfortable,” he said huskily, placing heavy hands on her shoulders. “I’ll be right back, and then…” Jeremy disappeared downstairs. As soon as he was out of sight, Jessica leaped to her feet.
Dashing to the window, she pushed the curtain aside and peered out into the snowy night. Where are they? she wondered, panic slicing into her heart like a knife. Sam’s car was nowhere in sight. Jessica raced to the other side of the cabin. The same view met her eyes from that window. Oh, no! They didn’t make it. The realization hit her like an avalanche. The whole time she’d been sitting on the couch with Jeremy, Jessica had felt protected by her knowledge that help was just a shout away.
I’m alone here, Jessica thought, her teeth suddenly chattering. They got lost or had an accident. I’m alone.
