‘Not really. That happened a couple of years later and although we ’d stayed in touch, we hardly saw each other. Both our careers had taken off. I was doing a lot of work in Los Angeles and South Africa . . . that was where we shot Mad Max. David was mainly in the UK. But you’re right. We both got nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the BAFTAs in the same year.

He was up for Forty Years On and I was there for The Hateful Eight which I’d done with Quentin Tarantino. He ’s an amazing man. A ball of energy. And he ’s a brilliant writer.’ The waiter arrived at the table with our first course, the prawns arranged with their heads poking out of a wine glass, their bodies disappearing into a mess of lettuce, avocado and Marie Rose sauce.

Ralph reached for his fork but he didn’t eat. ‘The BAFTA thing was a bit awkward, I must say,’ he went on. ‘But neither of us knew who’d won so it wasn’t as if we had anything to fight over and he couldn’t have been more pleased to see me.’ He paused. ‘I’ll never forget that night. I was a barrel of nerves and if it hadn’t been for David, I’m not sure I’d have even made it onto the stage.’

‘So what happened?’ I asked. ‘What do you mean?’ He sounded offended. ‘I heard you weren’t well.’ He stared at me. ‘You must know.’ ‘No. Teresa said I should ask you. I might have been away that year, on a book tour or something, but I was never very interested in the BAFTAs.

I could look it up, I suppose, but although I know there was some sort of fuss, I can’t remember reading anything.’ ‘To be honest with you, Anthony, I’d rather talk about something else.’ ‘I’m sorry, Ralph. Obviously, I don’t want to upset you.’ ‘Upset me? It didn’t just upset me. It ruined my life!’ I didn’t know what to say.
