A Kingdom Of Blood And Fate – KR McRae (1)

“My question is: Did your father die the same way Caz’s did? And how did your mother die if her fate isn’t tied to anyone in my world?” I steel myself for a snarky response, but to my surprise, Caspian sits back in his chair and considers my questions. He rests his elbow on the armrest and folds his fist under his chin as though deep in thought.
His eyes glaze with a distant look. He takes a deep breath. Judging by the dark expression on his face, he’s coming up for air from a painful past he’d rather not revisit. When he finally breaks the silence, his voice is quiet and unsteady. “They were murdered by a rival werewolf pack.” He continues to stare off at nothing. “Those traitors wanted to see Malrick on the throne. So, while my parents were traveling through the southern region, they were ambushed and killed.”
“Oh, my God,” I whisper. “I’m so sorry.” “They were coming for me next, but I sent our armies to find them and bring them to justice. To this day, Malrick insists he knew nothing of the plot, but I don’t believe it. So for now, I’m keeping a close watch on him.”
“How old were you?” He sighs. “Seventeen. The Royal Council wasted no time planning my coronation, and I was instilled as the king of the realm the day following their deaths.” “I’m sorry.” I bring a hand to my aching heart. “No one should lose their parents that young.” I take a deep breath, knowing that Caz is a touchy subject. “That’s the same age Caz was when his parents died, but they were killed by blood wraiths who came through the portal.”
He continues to rest his chin in his hand, his eyes reflecting the flames crackling in the fireplace. “When our light one dies, that death is mirrored in our world, one way or another. As for the death of our mothers, it is simply an unfortunate coincidence.” Although he tries to hide it, there’s a deep sadness he carries with him— the same sadness weighing Caz down.
A sorrow that unites them, whether they realize it or not. Maybe they’re more similar than just their appearance. “I’m so sorry, Caspian. I’m sorry for your loss.” I push my plate away having lost my appetite. He hums, staring into the fire. “You know, you’re the first person to offer their condolences.” “What do you mean? It’s been over three years, hasn’t it?” “Yes, well, I could never show my grief to the world, could I?” He drops his arm over the side of the chair, resting his head against the upholstered back of his tall chair.

I thought being sent to live with my grandparents would be the worst part of my summer. I was wrong. The boy I once spent lazy summers with has grown into a strong, mysterious protector… and he’s hiding a secret I never could’ve imagined. But when a tear between worlds drags us into a realm ruled by a bloodthirsty king, my life is rewritten beneath the glare of a scarlet moon.
Now I’m trapped in his court until the next full moon under a cruel bargain: resist the pull of fate between us—or lose my way home forever. But the longer I stay, the more tangled my heart becomes between two men bound to me by an ancient curse—and something far deeper than desire. How am I supposed to choose between the boy who’s always loved me… or the wicked king determined to claim my heart?
