“The contract has been unaltered for many years,” Hollow Tree replied. “You are the first in many generations to speak the language of the lawmakers. Perhaps you will be the one to amend what has lain untouched for so long.” Kara’s hands curled into fists. “Not if I’m dead, I won’t!” “Father, I have an idea.” Ivonne broke into the heated discussion with a softer tone. “What is it, little leaf?” “I will go.” Kara blinked.

Tears brimmed in her eyes, and she swiped them away with the back of her hand. “What?” “I’ll go,” Ivonne repeated. This time, she grinned, and her solemnity evaporated into the mist. “I’ll come with you, and I’ll help. A full-grown fey is worth at least half a dozen fighters. Athemis won’t know what hit them.” Hollow Tree grumbled wordlessly, but the tenor was thoughtful rather than discontented.

Eventually, he muttered, “There is no clause prohibiting a fey creature from joining a Judge’s Circle. It has simply not been done in over seven hundred years.” “High time we got back into practice, then.” Ivonne dusted her hands off—figuratively, Kara supposed, since they were still dripping—and stood on the water’s surface. “Come on, then! Bring me home!” Kara stared at her. “I don’t want to sound ungrateful, but…you’re gonna stand out. You’re green.” Ivonne laughed. “Oh, that’s easy to change.

Humans see what we want them to see. Don’t worry about that. It’ll be fine!” “If you say so,” Kara murmured. “I do say so,” Ivonne firmly stated. “Now, you’d best thank Father properly or else the magic will get antsy, and nobody likes antsy magic.” “Definitely not,” Kara agreed. She had no idea what “antsy magic” entailed, but she suspected she wouldn’t like it. She tore her eyes off the voluptuous green beauty still standing on the surface of the pool and focused on the giant floating log who was apparently her boss.

“The Vehmic Court extends its deepest gratitude to the Court of Fog and Grove for its hospitality and its generous offer of assistance in the Vehmic Court’s time of need. We honor this gift, and we will…protect her to the best of our ability.” The line was supposed to be, “and we will use it wisely,” but Kara thought she’d better not call Ivonne an it.

“The Court of Fog and Grove renews its vow of alliance and support to the Vehmic Court,” Hollow Tree replied. “May your justice be swift and true. Until we meet again.” “Until we meet again,” Kara echoed, but the grove was already gone. She stood at the edge of the forest, fifty yards from her rental car.

May We All Enjoy Grace to Live the Life We Are Called. — Michael 1kitap1.com/en CHAPTER ONE Tuesday, December 19, 2090 Kara Greims’ life looked a lot different than her last five-year plan had predicted. For one, she now spent most of her time in Neo Los Angeles, the sprawling megametropolis that covered a significant portion of California’s coast.

Her permanent address remained in the Central NorMetro area of North Texas Mega-Metroplex, formerly known as Dallas, so the population density was a familiar constant. The architecture that formed the backdrop of her daily life had shifted significantly. Part of her missed NorMetro’s open blue skies and dusty streets, but she was becoming accustomed to NLA’s Japanese-influenced skyscrapers. She couldn’t say she loved the ubiquitous, flashing neon advertising of the animated billboards covering the façades of those skyscrapers.

Still, she had to admit it provided excellent cover for her as often as not. Needing cover was another one of those things she’d never expected to factor into her daily routine, but such were the necessities of being a vigilante.
