I beat ass over Zane. He taught me how to throw hands and how to stand on business. “I… lo..ve.. you,” he sputtered with a gasp as blood flowed from his mouth. Being a nurse, I had seen blood. Never had it ever affected me the way it was in this moment. It was red. It was bright. It screamed death. My heart was already mourning him. He wasn’t going to make it. “Run,” he whispered taking his last breath, as his eyes held mine even in death.

A wave of nausea hit me as I gazed down at my baby brother. Ignoring his words, I couldn’t leave him. Running and leaving him wasn’t an option. Leave him to die alone. Never. “Zane,” I whispered, not believing what I was seeing. I didn’t move until I felt someone snatching me from behind by my hair, pulling me to my feet. “No,” I screamed, kicking my feet as I tried to hold on to my brother.

I knew he was gone but letting go of him meant letting him literally go. I wasn’t ready for that. I wasn’t ready for him to leave me. I wasn’t ready to let ZaZa go. Stumbling to my feet, tears flooded my eyes as I stared down at my brother in shock. His eyes were partially open, making me want to close them, give him some peace. My registry of the man behind me was delayed. Even with him gripping my ponytail, it took him speaking for me to realize my life was in danger, too.

“You have some explaining to do, Nurse Zuri,” the man whispered in my ear. The knife he held against my neck pricked my skin. I closed my eyes, blocking out the sight of Zane’s dead body. What had I done? Was this about Brianna? Who was I kidding?

That was exactly who this was about? Brianna had warned me. I listened, but I should have stayed gone. He wrapped an arm around my waist and kept his knife on my neck, moving me into a chair. I didn’t bother to struggle. Someone, probably the person who shot my brother, tied me to a chair as the other one placed tape across my mouth. Tears continued to spill down my cheeks. My brain was in overload.

I wanted this all over with. I was tired of everything: my pregnancy, these damn contractions, and Cole’s ignorant ass. Honestly, I would take the pain if Cole’s aggy ass would simply disappear off the face of the earth. Blowing out a breath, I tried to turn to my happy place, which was anywhere but here.

My contractions were getting closer and closer together, and it was getting harder and harder to ignore the pain radiating throughout my body. I sighed heavily once the contraction ended. I felt overwhelmed by the situation I found myself in. At this moment, there was nothing I could do about it. I had made my bed as my grandmother used to say, and I was laying in it.

As much as I wanted to run away, I couldn’t. God knew I would run away like my ass was on fire if I could. I was in so much pain that I didn’t know what hurt the most. I wanted an epidural, but Cole read somewhere that it wasn’t good to have one, so I had forgone anything to help with pain.

As much as I hated his guts, I had to admire the fact he wanted nothing to happen to our baby. Knowing his crazy ass, he didn’t want anything to happen to me because then, he couldn’t control me. Break me further than what he had already broken me. Sadly, it had taken him less than two years to turn me into a woman I didn’t recognize. It was really fascinating how I allowed him to come in and destroy everything about me.

Every time I thought about what I allowed him to do to me, I felt sick to my stomach.
