Arabian Nights – Simone Shirazi

Not literally, of course, but the fact that Zayn was in this room with both Mahmoud and Laleh was more than a little weird. He and Mahmoud had removed their shoes by the door at her request, both awkwardly bumping shoulders and exchanging glances as they did. Zayn could understand why she’d want them only in socks, since the carpet in this space was an elaborate piece of art.
It was clearly hand woven, a one- of-a-kind Persian masterpiece, and from what he could make out in the dim light, its reds, golds, and greens told a story. Laleh had retreated to the bay window on the other side of the room, light from the streetlamps filtering in to illuminate her form. Her knees were drawn to her chest, a faded pashmina pulled tightly around her shoulders as if to ward off a nonexistent chill.
It was, without a doubt, the most closed off he’d ever seen her. “I said you could come in, Zayn,” Laleh murmured, but her gaze never left the window. “Not him.” Zayn had seen the displeasure on her face the moment he’d beckoned for Mahmoud to enter with him, but this was how it had to be.
This time he was going to do it right. “I can’t be alone with you, Laleh,” he tried to reason, hoping that even in her distrustful state she’d understand. “You know that.” “Do I?” Her words were empty, the passion and playfulness Zayn was used to hearing completely gone.
“Because I distinctly remember us having been alone a few times before.” “I know.” Zayn sighed, ashamed of his past actions. “I know, and that was wrong of me. We should have had someone else with us, preferably Khalid.” He looked at Mahmoud, their makeshift chaperone this time around. “Although I guess Mahmoud will do in this case. Are you mahram?” Mahmoud grunted, something Zayn was quickly learning was the man’s favorite form of communication.
“I am close enough.” That certainly wasn’t encouraging. Zayn made to ask more about their relation to each other, but Laleh spoke first.

There were days when His Majesty King Mohammed al-Haydar wondered how he’d managed to get himself into such a position. With his youngest daughter turning seven in a week, a slew of international affairs to attend to, and his country’s independence celebration in just a few hours, today was one of those days. He had been raised knowing he would one day rule Malikbahr, a tiny island country in the Persian Gulf that his family had governed for nearly a hundred years.
He had not, however, considered the possibility of having so many children he could start his own football team.
