‘Do you want to do all the talking?’ he asked Vicky, turning to watch her step out from the other side. ‘Not particularly,’ she shrugged. ‘How about I do some of the talking, and you do the rest?’ ‘Tell you what – let’s see if she’s in first,’ he replied. ‘If she is, then I suggest you start, and I’ll jump in if you need me to.

Just remember, she’s probably still very upset.’ Nodding at him, she led the way up to the front door to ring the bell. Hearing the sound of approaching footsteps, they glanced around at each other before pulling out their respective IDs. ‘Mrs Lowe?’ Vicky enquired, holding hers up to the shrivelled, almost unrecognisable face of the woman peering out at them.

‘DI Gilbert, and my colleague, DCI Tanner. We met briefly the other day at your husband’s house.’ ‘Do you have any news?’ she suddenly demanded. ‘If you’re asking if we’ve found who hurt your daughter, I’m afraid we haven’t – at least not yet.’ ‘You’re not here to tell me that you made a mistake?’ ‘I’m sorry,’ Vicky replied with a sorrowful frown.

‘As I think my colleague mentioned before, our medical examiner has been able to positively identify her.’ ‘Yes, of course,’ came the woman’s quiet reply, her bloodshot eyes drifting to the ground. ‘I just thought there might have been a mix-up – and that she’d been found staying at a friend’s house.’ ‘I’m sorry again,’ Vicky repeated, unsure what else to say. Wiping away an escaping tear, Mrs Lowe lifted her head to offer them both a faltering smile.

‘Would you like to come in?’ she asked, glancing a little awkwardly behind her. ‘I’ve only just put the kettle on.’ Vicky looked briefly at Tanner before saying, ‘If you don’t mind?’ ‘Not at all,’ Mrs Lowe replied. ‘To be honest, I could do with the company.’ Following her through to a small, cluttered kitchen, with a tortoiseshell cat staring curiously at them from on top of a wooden table, Mrs Lowe shooed it gently off before moving to the kettle.

Switching it on, she began fishing items out of the cupboards. ‘Tea or coffee?’ Viewing the own-brand jar of instant coffee she’d just pulled out with wary suspicion, Tanner closed the kitchen door before replying, ‘I’d rather not, thank you,’ only for Vicky to jab him sharply in the arm before shooting him an admonishing glare. ‘But then again,’ he quickly added, ‘if it’s not too much trouble, I’d love a coffee.’ ‘I’ll have one as well, thank you,’ said Vicky, as the cat began curling itself around her leg.

‘May I ask what your cat’s called?’ ‘Her official name is Amber, but Sasha tends to use slightly more derogatory terms.’ ‘Sasha being your daughter,’ Vicky continued, ambling towards a shelf crammed with decorative items and family photographs, ‘the young woman we met the other day?’
