Botanical Mischief – TA White

They put on masks and acted in ways to keep outsiders always guessing as to their true selves. Pallas with his mania that hid the sensitive soul inside. Jin’s immaturity that distracted from his razor sharp intellect. Even Kira’s bravado concealed the fear of loss she carried with her everywhere. “How long will this take?” Gus asked Kyle, ignoring the enigma that Caius was shaping up to be.
“I don’t know. Hours. Days. Months. Do you have any idea just how many cameras there are on Titan?” The question was a rhetorical one as Kyle answered it a second later. “Thousands. There are thousands of cameras on Titan. And did the gardener give me a timeline so as to limit the parameters of my search? No, he did not. I don’t even know what he means by ‘people who don’t belong.’ How is he defining ‘don’t belong’? Technically, none of us belong here.
Do you know how dangerous space travel is? And to live in space? Permanently? It’s a miracle any of us exist at all.” Caius stared at Kyle with a combination of fascination and repulsion. “Does he go on diatribes like this often?” “Quite often.” It was one of Kyle’s most annoying traits.
Right up there with his propensity for games of chance and his lack of willpower or anything hinting at self-discipline. “Oh.” Kyle sounded surprised. “I found something.” Of course, he did. That was why Gus counted him as one of hers despite his many detractors. Gus moved to hover over his shoulder. “What is it?” Kyle ripped off his VR headset with a crow of satisfaction as he flicked a video file onto the monitors. He nodded at the freeze frame of a Tuann standing on the periphery of a crowded bar that Gus recognized.
It was Cat Three. Located on level ten in the heart of the entertainment sector, it wasn’t the nicest bar. Nor was it the worst. The Tuann may have gone unremarked if not for the undue attention he was paying to a table of four on the opposite side of the room.
Botanical Mischief is a spin off from the Firebird Chronicles. While it is written to stand alone, it may be easier to read the Firebird Chronicles first as this book takes place during the events of Echoes of Insurrection. For those who choose not to do that, I’ve included a world introduction, a cast of characters, and a breakdown of the major Houses to make your reading journey a little easier and less confusing. Introduction 1kitap1.com/en At a time when humans were still chasing after their prey on foot and lobbing sharpened sticks at their enemies, the Tuann were staging a rebellion against their former masters, a race known as the Osiri.
After great sacrifice and many lives lost, the Tuann succeeded, taking their newfound freedom and fleeing across the stars in a great exodus. For a time, peace reined among the Tuann. They built their great Houses. Then an empire meant to protect them should their old masters ever come calling. They developed and evolved into a warrior race that none could subjugate ever again.
Except the Osiri were reluctant to give up on their former pets. They saw what the Tuann had become and coveted them all the more. Knowing the Tuann had grown too strong to be easily brought back under control, the Osiri built their own armies, comprised out of those races they had enslaved. The Tsavitee. A scourge that swept across the stars until it encountered humans and their hero, the Phoenix. But this is not that story. World History This is the story of a group of children stolen from their Tuann parents in an event known as the Sorrowing.
For years, their fate remained unknown. They were thought lost to their former people. Until one dark night, those children followed in the footsteps of their long ago ancestors and escaped. Forty five children fled into the forest that night. Two were separated from the pack but forty three made it out together. Pityrodia Augustensis, Gus, for short, was among them. 1kitap1.com/en The Tuann have divided themselves into five great Houses under which countless sub-houses have sworn loyalty in a complicated network of alliances.
The Tuann’s emperor and his Faces, men and women who represent his will, rule over them all. The Five Major Houses Luatha – Mostly comprised of artisans. They are very in tune with nature and their surroundings. Roake – They are smaller in number than the other great houses but mighty. Their warriors are considered some of the best in the empire. Danai – Not much is known Asanth – they believe might makes right and follow the strongest.
Kashori – Not much is known Tuann Great Houses 1kitap1.com/en Important characters from the Firebird universe who might pop up in this one Kira – the main character of the Firebird universe.
