“You’re holding the knife wrong.” “Well, duh. I reach for the butter dish, deliberately angling my body so my French maid’s dress rides up. Two can play this game. His sharp intake of breath is deeply satisfying. “Like this?” I hold the butter knife like a toddler with a crayon, while fighting the muscle memory of years of proper technique. His hand closes over mine again.

“Are you trying to destroy my kitchen?” “Maybe.” I wiggle into him and pretend to adjust my stance. The sound he makes is definitely not PG-13. “Be still.” His command comes out rough. “Or what?” My provocative question slips out before I can stop it. His free hand grips my hip and holds me in place. “Or this grilled cheese is going to turn into something else entirely.” Heat pools low in my belly. “Is that like, a threat or a promise?” “Depends.”

His thumb strokes circles over my hipbone, and sparks shoot up my spine. “On whether you can focus long enough to butter bread without causing a national incident.” I manage to absolutely massacre the bread with butter, while hyperaware of every point where his body touches mine. The knife shakes a little, and not entirely for show.

“There!” I announce brightly and present my disaster. “Instagram- worthy, right?” He looks at the mangled bread, then at me. Danger flickers in those gunmetal-colored eyes. “You’re doing this on purpose.” “Doing what?” I’m all wide-eyed and innocent. “Being, like, totally helpful and stuff?” His fingers flex on my hip. “We’ll see about that.”
