Change Your Ticket – Clara Nielson

The water below was dark green and completely clear, the way mountain water gets, and the pool bottom was visible and smooth and rock-free in the landing zone. There were two people swimming around down there right now. They looked fine. They looked small, but fine. Totally fine. Everything was fine. “Okay,” I said. “We jump on three.” “We’re doing this?” “You have to. Bucket list.” “Yeah, but a bucket list isn’t a contractually-binding agreement.
It’s just a bunch of wishes.”. “And you said you wished to live life to the fullest.” He stared at me for a beat, tilting his head as he seemed to think back on the words. “When did I say that?” “In that magazine interview.” He arched a brow, and I realized that this explanation did not clarify. I sighed and tried again. “You know, the one when you had just released Golden Freefall music video. You said you loved the video because it gave you a taste of living life to the fullest, and that’s how you want to live.”
“How do you remember all of this?” “Because I have followed your career extensively and possibly read everything you’ve ever said in an interview, which I’m choosing not to be embarrassed about right now because it means I know you actually want to do this.” He was quiet for a second. The waterfall roared beside us. The spray kept hitting my face, which was not helping my composure. “I said that in an interview?” he asked. “Seventeen magazine, two years ago.” I turned and poked him in the chest, giving him a knowing look.
“You also said if you could choose any adventure, you’d hike to a waterfall and jump in. Direct quote.” “You remember the direct quote?” “I remember everything. It’s a blessing and a curse. Ask me literally anything. Actually, don’t, we’re getting off track.” I gestured at the drop. “Are we jumping?” He looked at the water. I looked at the water. Then I looked at him, and he looked at me, and I don’t know what he was thinking about but I was thinking that six hours ago I had broken into his hotel room to steal a T-shirt and now we were standing on a cliff in the Hawaiian mist together and life was both very strange and very good and I wanted to remember exactly what this felt like, the spray on my face and the roar of the falls and him standing next to me looking at the same water I was looking at like we were the same kind of person, which maybe we were, a little, in ways I hadn’t expected.
