They stared at her in disgust. Tilly threw her hands on her hips and glared back. Bert had men unloading the cashbox and mail bags while others were unhitching the sweat covered horses. She reached inside and recovered her carpetbag. As she pushed through the crowd she saw Gareth standing nearby. She smiled. Gareth smiled back at Tilly. He was grateful she hadn’t been hurt. He planned to have words with Bert. Riding shotgun was no place for a woman.

His heart wouldn’t be able to stand the worry. Tilly came to a stop in front of Gareth and peered up. “Hi,” she greeted. “Exciting day, huh?” “A bit. Care to join me at the saloon for a whisky or two?” Simon was heading toward them and Tilly raised her hand to acknowledge she had seen him approach. Sonofabitch that hurts. She gritted her teeth against the pain. Simon joined them. “Gareth,” he acknowledged. Gareth nodded. He faced Tilly.

“Another robbery attempt?” “Yep. We’re going to the saloon for a whisky, care to join us?” Tilly asked. “Sounds good to me.” Simon stood back and motioned for Tilly to move ahead. What the hell does he mean, ‘another’ robbery attempt? Gareth was going to question Tilly later. He was liking her riding shotgun less and less. The men strode on either side of Tilly. She pushed through the saloon doors and they followed her in. Adi and Clyde stood at the bar. Sam and Bill had found themselves a card game.

Dan and Adi were deep in conversation but turned to face the trio when Clyde called out a welcome to Tilly. Tilly moved behind the bar while Gareth and Simon joined Dan and Adi. She lifted down three glasses and set them on the bar before reaching for a bottle of whisky. After unscrewing the cap she poured the shots.

Gareth noted the liberal amount she poured in her own. She was trembling. Probably nerves from being shot at. After taking a large gulp, she shrugged out of her coat. Adi screamed, “Tilly.” The attention of all those at the bar shifted to her. She watched as mouths dropped open or lips pursed. “What?” She didn’t have a clue what was going on. Adi moved closer and lifted Tilly’s arm. “Your arm.” “What about….” Tilly started to ask but warm drops of liquid dripping from her hand caused her to turn her head and examine her arm.

Her sleeve was soaked with blood. Her knees shook. “Oh. It’s probably from David.”

They were looking for a couple of whiskeys and a card game after a hard day in the saddle. A loud, angry voice brought them both to a sudden halt. “Get your goddamned mangy ass outta my saloon before I put a bullet between your eyes.” Gareth’s eyes perused the busy saloon. At a table tucked away in the back, a pint-sized boy?

Girl? Stood pointing a Colt at the object of her obvious disgust. He elbowed Dan and pointed to where the altercation was taking place. “C’mon, Tilly.” The slurring voice indicated the man was obviously drunk. “Ya know I didn’t mean to hurt her.
