How can we be certain of who God has placed in our lives for us? How can we discern who needs to be in our courts? Let us first look at God. After all, friendship was His idea. We see this through His companionship with His new creations in the garden of Eden, and even after sin corrupted our connection, God was actively pursuing ways to restore the relationship.

He chose Abraham as His friend and spoke to Moses face-to-face. They shared a close relationship, having the privilege to hear from God. In obedience, they led the way to the line of Christ. Jesus Himself had disciples and made friends on His journey to the cross.

At the Last Supper, He told His twelve disciples, “I’m no longer calling you servants because servants don’t understand what their master is thinking and planning. No, I’ve named you friends because I’ve let you in on everything I’ve heard from the Father” (John 15:15 MSG). Jesus giving up His own life on the cross is the greatest demonstration of friendship: “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13). And now, as His living, breathing disciples today, Jesus calls us friends.

Covenant Friendships God has set aside people who are meant to be your spiritual partners. There are God-sent friendships and there are covenant friendships—these are the people you are destined to do life with. God knows you need covenant friends for what He has called you to do. It’s imperative to be selective about who we surround ourselves with, as “bad company corrupts good character” (1 Cor. 15:33). What helped Heather Lindsey, founder of the Pinky Promise, in her walk with Christ was recognizing the three zones of friendships: the outer court, the inner court, and the Holy of Holies.4 The outer court consists of people you’ve known forever: perhaps your old college roommate, the woman you work with in ministry, the old friend you grew apart from, or the girl you met at summer camp who still likes your pictures on Instagram.

In this court, they don’t really know you. You are fond of one another but don’t hold high expectations of each other. These aren’t necessarily the ones you run to when you’re down. You can rely on your inner court more than your outer court friends. These are your close friends—you frequent one another’s homes and often have a great time together.

Some of your best friends may be sprinkled in there.

“Claim Your Crown speaks to the truth of who we really are. I believe the key to unlocking joy, purpose, and peace is discovering what it means to be daughters of the King. This book will be a guide to walk you through that journey!” Kristen Dalton Wolfe, bestselling author of The Sparkle Effect, founder of She Is More, and former Miss USA “Tarah-Lynn does a beautiful job of speaking directly to women like they are her sistas.

She holds nothing back from telling radical truths in a way that invites us to claim our royal positions as daughters of the King. While reading these words, I was inspired and empowered to have more conversations with Jesus and encouraged to share the love that I’ve received with others!” Chelsea Hurst, cohost of the Encounter Now podcast and author of Above All Else 1kitap1.com/en 1kitap1.com/en 1kitap1.com/en © 2020 by Tarah-Lynn Adorned, LLC Published by Revell a division of Baker Publishing Group PO Box 6287, Grand Rapids, MI 49516-6287 www.revellbooks.com Ebook edition created 2020 All rights reserved.
