“I’ll make sure of it.” Margot pressed her lips together. “You probably think about it all the time.” She was right about that. He teetered between saying more or cutting off the conversation when his phone buzzed. A text from Lisa. Call me. “Your daughter?” Margot asked. “No.” “So, your dad is taking Eli’s death pretty hard?” “Not just the death, the investigation.” “And he probably puts a lot of pressure on you to solve it,” she said.

Brandon nodded. “I’m pretty sure he thinks he could tackle it on his own. But he’s got physical issues and…” “If you need help, I can give you a hand,” she said. He wasn’t sure what she meant. “With your father, I mean. Does he still live out on the property where you grew up?” “Yeah, but that’s not necessary.” The last thing he needed was a local defense attorney getting wrapped up in his family’s business. “You’re sure?” Isabel Jackson approached their table. “What’s up?” Brandon asked. “Sue said you’d be here.

We have to talk,” she said. Her eyes landed on Margot. Jackson turned back to Brandon without acknowledging her. “Outside.” Brandon followed Jackson out the front doors of the café. When they reached the sidewalk, she turned to him. “I have to take the next couple of days off.” He could sense the worry in her voice. “What happened, Jackson?” “My father is ill.

I need to go to Florida. They think he had a heart attack,” she said, her voice quivering. “I’m sorry,” Brandon said. “When do you leave?” “I need to be at SeaTac by three.” The airport was at least a four-hour drive. “We’ll find someone to fill in,” Brandon said. “Okay, but what about the Dunn case?” “We’re still on the lookout for Todd Dunn,” Brandon said. “The goal is to convince him to let us into the rental and give us a chance to find his cameras.”

“That’s part of it,” she said. “I went to the bank this morning. They said Todd came in with the original will, claiming she’d left everything to him.” “I thought Todd said there wasn’t a will.” “Exactly,” she said. “When?” “Yesterday. But Mrs. Dunn informed the bank before she died that she’d removed him from the will. There’s a note on her account.” That jived with what Patti Baldwin had said about Mrs. Dunn removing Todd from the will.

“How did he react?”

He cocked his head, listening as the rumble and growl of chainsaws ripped through the silence. He had a hunch the poachers were over a ridge just south of the forest service road where he stood now. An October chill had settled over the coastal forest as the sun made a quick descent behind a scowling swirl of storm clouds brewing over the Pacific.

In just a few short weeks, autumn winds would ravage the Olympic Mountains. The breeze bending the tips of the evergreens was the calm before the storm. He fetched his rifle from the SUV and headed for the poachers. Brandon crossed into the woods, waist-high in sword ferns and huckleberry, the wet instantly soaking his pants. He trudged forward, maneuvering around a thicket of fledgling maple.

The green shoots snapped under his boots. As he peaked the ridge, he surveyed the ravine below. The chainsaws choked silent and Brandon fell to a crouch. He was outnumbered and most likely outgunned. It could take anywhere between 20 and 40 minutes for help to reach him this far into the wilderness.

A man shouted, “We’re done for today.” “We can carry more than this,” a younger voice replied. “You’re not as strong as you think you are,” the first man said. “Besides, I need a drink.” “You always need a drink.”
