Dealing With Uncertainty: The Art And Science Of Resilience And Decision – Making – Bowman, Laurie

Transparency turns stakeholders into allies, whether they’re colleagues or loved ones, strengthening your resilience against financial shocks. Dreamworld’s tragedy stemmed from prioritizing profits over safety, a choice that wasn’t just costly but morally bankrupt. Ethical planning anchors resilience in values such as fairness, ac- countability, and sustainability. In projects, I support my clients to adopt an “all-hazards” approach to risk assessment and deci- sion-making to ensure the full range of environmental and social impacts guide decisions.
To this end, long-term thinking prevents the shortcuts that sank Dreamworld. Apply this to finance: Diversify investments to spread risk, avoiding speculative bets. Engage with ESG funds to align money with purpose, as Paul Polman’s Unilever did (Chapter 1). From my own experience, resilience is also connected to in- tegrity. It’s about knowing what you stand for, and making choic- es that honour your values—even when they’re hard.
Some of the decisions I made were driven by idealism, but without enough foresight. Now, I’ve learned that ethics and pragmatism can—and should—coexist. I continue to serve the causes I believe in. But I do so with clearer eyes, stronger tools, and a deeper respect for myself and others.
I’ve come to understand that we can only serve the world sus- tainably when we also care for ourselves. These strategies—planning, engagement, and ethics—unite per- sonal and professional resilience. Let’s now reflect on how to ap- ply them to your own risks. Reflective Exercise: Assessing Your Financial Resilience Financial resilience begins with awareness—knowing your risks and resources. Take a moment to assess your financial resilience, whether you’re running a business, managing a project, or navi- gating personal goals. Reflect on a financial risk you’re facing now—perhaps a tight bud- get, a new venture, or an unexpected expense.
First, ask yourself, “What’s one step I can take to build a contingency plan?” It might be setting aside $50 a month for savings, drafting a risk register for your startup, or researching market rates for your services. Next, consider this question: “Who can I turn to for support?”
