Like he meant more. “Morgan,” Layla cried, throwing herself into my arms. I hadn’t noticed that Macey had moved away to chat with the teacher who came over earlier; I was so consumed by my conversation with Nial. I held Layla close. “You look so beautiful. I’m sorry I wasn’t here earlier.” “You’re here now,” Layla said, beaming at me. “I want you to meet someone. I’ve told her all about you. Phoebe, this is Morgan.” “Hopefully, not all about me,” I commented, reaching out to shake Phoebe’s hand. “Not everything is true.”

I gave the girl a wink and was pleased to see her glance back at Layla with an adoring look that matched my girl’s. “Are you ladies having fun?” I asked. Neither of them had noticed Nial and I wondered if I was so aware of him after centuries of being chased that it was only me that could see him. Even Macey hadn’t reacted to his presence until I spoke to him and even then, she thought I was talking to myself.

“Yes,” they both said, giggling and holding hands. “Let’s go, Phoebe. Morgan, thank you for coming to see me…and for the dress and the shoes and the makeup. You don’t know what it means to me. I would have understood but it means the world that you’re here.” “You earned it kid.”

I pulled her in for a quick hug. “You deserve the world,” I whispered in her ear. When I waved to her, I saw Macey dancing with the sexy teacher and threw her a thumbs up as she glanced over. I gave her a wave and hoped she would get the message that I was leaving without her. Nial followed me from the gym, no one paying him any attention. Just before I left the dance I turned, hesitating for only a moment before I let my voice free.

I let my siren song weave into the music, buoying the mood in the dance and spreading a layer of positivity over the students and teachers. It wasn’t much, only a nudge so that everyone would have a night they cherished and never forgot. There would be no malice, only enjoyment. The assassin took my hand, threading his fingers through mine and leading me away.

“What did you do?” he asked. “Made sure that there would be no more negativity and that everyone would have a good night.” I thought back to the last dance I had attended, so long ago and yet a memory that was as fresh as if it happened yesterday. The last dance before I was married, and the last time I saw my best friend.

I looked back at Layla dancing with her friends and how Phoebe was still looking at her. The way Nathanial had always looked at me.

I can’t wait to get home from work and see what you all have to say and what you are up to. To my fantastic beta and ARC teams. And that one person who inspired Radford Crawley. You polish up my rough words and make them shine. Thank you for finding all those plot holes and parts that don’t work. I am astounded by the time and effort you put in. Special thanks to Beba who keeps me going on those days where writing is hard. To my cover designer Natasha.

Your work is so beautiful and often inspires me. You work so hard for indie authors and I’m sure I speak for them all when I say thank you from the bottom of my heart. Finally, to my husband. I joke about how I wouldn’t be a writer if you didn’t watch so much sport but we both know that’s not true.
