Now, of course, it all fit. Her size, her ease at handling a gun, her friendship with Stacey, the telegram they’d gotten today. God, he’d been such a fool. He’d fallen in love with the very culprit he’d been sent to fmd and arrest. What he couldn’t figure out was why she had done it.

How had a woman like her gotten mixed up in some¬ thing like this? Why? Could it be he’d been wrong about her from the first? Was she merely playing the role of an innocent? He laughed softly, ridiculing himself. Of course! He’d grant her an excellent performance, but she’d been no more an innocent than he.

Damn her soul to hell for the suffering he was sure to endure. His mouth twisted into a grimace of hate as he settled himself down for a long wait. No doubt she gained her information from Stacey himself. Did she wait for the man to fall asleep after she’d bedded him before she looked through his papers?

Tanner groaned at the thought, and a rage the likes of which he’d never known seized him. He’d treated her like a lady, demanding nothing but what she was ready to give. He’d asked her to marry him. He was in love for the first time in ten long years. Why, in God’s name, had he picked this particular woman? Sitting alone in the dark, he almost wished she’d never return. If this night’s escapade proved fatal, he’d suffer to be sure, but that suffering wouldn’t compare to what he was sure to know if she came back.

How was he going to bear the ordeal that lay ahead? How was he go¬ ing to put the woman he loved in prison? He leaned over her and watched her mouth draw up into a tight line. That sweet, delicious mouth. How many nights had he dreamed of kissing it, of having her kiss him in return?

He watched her glare at him. It didn’t matter. Nothing mattered now but finishing the game that started the moment they met. Tanner wrenched her open trousers down her legs. They bunched at her ankles. With one hand he tore her shirt apart. She lay exposed, but proudly so. Elizabeth wouldn’t cower for the likes of this brute. She sneered, then said, “I haven’t the strength to win out against you, but you’ll find little enjoyment in this act.”

Tanner laughed softly at her threat. Litde enjoyment? God, if she only knew. He had done little more than look and already his mind swam with an almost crazed need, knowing the pleasure that lay in store. Her body was perfection. Soft, white, warm and in¬ viting. Taking this woman would bring pleasure beyond compare.

LAWMAN’S TEMPTATION “Lady” Tanner drawled, “the only trouble you’re likely to find is if you tease me any further.”

“Marshal, am I teasing you?” Elizabeth asked with ex¬ aggerated innocence. “I promised myself I was going to warm your backside for running away this morning.” Not the slightest bit disturbed, she smiled. “Do you always keep your promises, Marshal?” she asked as she reached beneath his leather vest for the buttons of his shirt.

“Eventually.” His breathing was labored and shallow by the time she opened the last button. Elizabeth parted his shirt, holding the material away from his skin. Her gaze was warm with pleasure as she surveyed what she’d uncovered. “Right now,” he drawled, “I have in mind other places to warm. . . ” GET YOUR VERY OWN ZEBRA BIG MOUTH BOX …
