the command was bellowed, and for a moment it seemed that no one would obey. Then, as the beams of the bull’s- eyes flashed over the mass of struggling opponents, the neophytes sprang apart, knowing that they had done their duties and now needed to clear the way for their liege lady’s men-at-arms to finish the job.

Their diligence and bravery were unquestionable, but against men in armor, other men in armor were the best opponents. The sudden calm revealed one intruder face down on the floorboards, unmoving, with another on his knees, Elizabeth’s poniard at his throat while a neophyte was busy wrapping herself around his feet, using her full strength to keep him from getting any control of his legs back. As militiamen moved to point their own Fangs’ swords at him, he ceased to struggle, and Lady Beth released him to them.

The third assailant was more intransigent. As the light fell on him and the corporal of the Lions demanded his surrender yet again, he kept his feet and clutched a gauntleted fist around a neophyte’s throat as he grasped her to himself bodily, using her like a shield in a vicious embrace. Despite her vulnerability, the young woman kept struggling while the intruder pointed his sword at the militia, as if to keep up the fight. “Let me pass, or I’ll kill her,” he growled, and the militiamen hesitated.

“Don’t be a damned fool, Wilforn,” Amelia said, half stepping from amidst her closest guardians. From that first moment of this inept assassination attempt, Amelia had recognized his voice, and the lamplight now confirmed the fact for her. “Do you doubt me, witch?” the squire demanded. He laid his blade against the neophyte’s belly. Amelia had no uncertainty that the edge would slash her shift to ribbons in an instant, and even if he did not use the weapon, her red face showed that his grip must surely be brutally painful around her throat.

If his blade did not wound her, he would soon throttle all breath from her body. “Release her or you will die, no matter her fate!” the leader of the militiamen declared.

How was that possible? Like so many of Bridgetown’s streets in the predawn hour, this thoroughfare, hemmed in on each side by tenements rising two and three stories high, was a path of ruin. The running battles of the night were passing, and in the meager light, ghost-like figures were emerging timidly from their homes to see what might be salvaged of their lives and their town. Amongst the yeomen townsfolk who were clearing the bodies of the slain from their gutters and wondering if they could find food in the coming day, the many-faced being known to those who did know it only as a lyrebird, affected the same shock as the Bridgetown natives—shuffling and seemingly bewildered.
