GRAIL Avalon Rising GRAIL Book 2 – Robby Jed Raines

Mel knelt nearby, quiet as a wolf at rest, her senses stretched out farther than sight or sound. Tony froze mid-step. His ears pricked, muscles stiffening as a growl rumbled low in his chest. His gaze locked on an approaching sedan creeping too slow down the road. Jed’s jaw set, voice flat.
“That one ain’t drivin’ like they’re headed home.” Mel inhaled, her voice quiet, taut. “Scent’s wrong. Driver’s wired too tight.” Doc rose slightly, watching the glow of the headlights sweep over Kirk and Tony in the yard. “They definitely slowed down when they passed Kirk. I saw the dog tense up, react before the car was even on him. That’s not nothing.” The sedan rolled past, lingered a moment too long, then turned the corner without stopping. Kirk tugged Tony back toward the porch, frowning but not alarmed.
“Easy, boy. Just a car.” Siobhan’s voice came soft over comms. “Jed, want me to patch Declan? Get a make and plate?” Jed kept his eyes on the corner, then nodded once. “Yeah. Do it. Let him know we’ve got a tail sniffin’ around.” He turned to the others. “Mel, Rocky, Siobhan — get after that sedan, quiet. I want to know where they hole up. Doc an’ I’ll stay put with the house.” Rocky gave a short nod. Mel shifted, wolf-shadow flickering in her eyes. Siobhan was already working the comms rig.
Within seconds, the SUV eased into the street, taillights winking once before vanishing after the sedan. Jed exhaled, finally pulling his gaze back to the house. His voice was low, certain. “If they’re comin’ for Rick’s kin, they just made the biggest mistake of their lives.” Pickens, South Carolina Declan’s comms rig crackled. Siobhan’s voice cut through, calm but clipped. “Declan, we’ve got movement up here. Jed wants a direct line. Stand by.” Declan straightened in the driver’s seat of the Shelby, pulling the handset closer. “Patch him through.”
A beat of static, then Jed’s voice came low and steady. “Boss, we just had a sedan creep by Kirk’s place. Slowed down when he was in the yard with his dog. Carol’s inside makin’ supper. Nothin’ overt, but the kind of slow-roll that don’t sit right.” Declan’s brow furrowed. “Ye’ve eyes on it still?” “Aye—” Jed caught himself, smirking. “Yeah. Mel, Rocky, and Siobhan are tailin’ it now, see where it goes.
Doc and me stayed back with the house. Kirk and Carol are covered.” Declan’s hand brushed the butt of Fury, his voice lowering. “Good. Don’t let ’em sniff too close. And Jed—” He paused, letting weight carry through the line. “Watch yersel, boyo.” There was a chuckle on the other end, dry as whiskey. “Boss, when have you ever known Doc and me to get ourselves into trouble?” Declan didn’t miss a beat. “Well, there was that time in Slidell, Louisiana…”[3] The silence stretched a half-second, then Jed laughed outright.
“Yeah, but that was Doc’s fault, not mine.”

He thought over the phone conversation they had had when Rick got off the plane in Missouri before he had gone to meet Major Clark. “When you get done in Missouri, come see me,” Jayce had said. Now Rick wondered what kind of conversation they were going to have. Rick was eight years older than Jayce, but they had always been close, even when they were kids.
But once Jayce went into the Marine Corps and started gaining rank and moving around, they had less and less time to see each other.
