The doctor tentatively removed a pistol from a holster with a two-finger grip and brought it to the Senator. Without saying a word, the Senator checked to see if there was a round in the chamber and then checked the magazine. “Thank you, Doctor. Please send Gina Riker in to see me.” “Of course, Senator.” “THE KID SHOT YOU, HUH?” Gina said as she came through the door. “Actually, it wasn’t Yeti. He had a two-shot derringer but he missed with both rounds.

I am not sure he was trying to hit me.” “Then…” “It was that little brat of a girl, the one that they picked up with Pepper. She shot us with one of Tar’s Mac 10s.” “How old is that child?” “Eight or nine, I would guess.”

“I should’ve paid more attention to her,” Gina said. “I think I made a mistake. I underestimated that child.” “You made another mistake as well.” Gina seemed puzzled, “What…” The Senator removed his pistol from under the covers. “You underestimated my reaction to your failure.” “Senator, be reasonable. You can’t do this…”

Gina’s eyes were locked onto the silvery glint of the pistol. The senator smiled. None of his advisers, except Tar, were allowed to carry a weapon, ever. “Of course I can. You yourself said that there are no more laws.” OceanofPDF.com Wayne “Oklahoma sucks,” Dave complained. “I think you mean that running from a bunch of Stinks sucks in any state?”

“Well, yeah. Hey, just think, Wayne, if we could trade deodorant to those Stinks, we could get rich and retire to Barbados.” “Why Barbados?” “No Stinks.” “That we know of.” “Hey, here comes Cap. I wonder if he and Sam figured out how to move our column faster?” “Wayne, Dave,” Cap nodded.

This was the first time Cap deigned to speak directly to Dave. “Dr. McKay has an idea, and I think it’s pretty good.” “Yeah?” “McKay and Sam think we should abandon all the horses and stock, and load everybody we can in the travel trailers behind the tank. He says we’ll make better time.” “Until we run out of fuel. Then we’ll be on foot.” Dave said, “And the Stinks could catch us.”

“Look, Wayne,” Cap paused. “You too, Dave.” Cap’s opinion of Dave had gone up exponentially when Dave killed a Stink who managed to get into our circle with his bare hands the last time the Stinks attacked. “We lost another ten men in the previous attack. If we continue like this, those Stinks will just whittle us down.” “Yeah, I see that too.”

“Sam agrees. We need to make a run for it, a mechanized run for it.” “What about fuel?” “We have enough fuel for a little over 100 miles. We’ll have to find more fuel along the way.”
