We listened, enthralled by the troll’s narrative. The troll’s words painted a vivid picture of an island that had borne witness to the machinations of a madwoman who unleashed countless tragedies and had ultimately made the island a dark place. The troll waved off our empathetic comments and gestured to the pool. “You eat for your babies.

Then you destroy the magic.” I nodded and knelt down to examine the creatures inside the pool. Stella whistled next to me. “How do we do this?” One giant hand swiped through the water so fast the fish and other critters couldn’t swim away. The troll held a bounty and smiled at us. He dropped it on the rock and gestured to it with his chin. “Eat.” “Thank you!” I called out before I conjured my witch fire. Starting a fire would risk attracting the demons and jeopardizing our safety, so I roasted the sea creatures briefly with my witch fire.

We fell into silence as we cooked and ate the crustaceans the troll gathered from the large tidepool. We shared it with him, and he seemed pleased with the cooked version. Stella looked over at me with her brows furrowed from concern and broke the silence a few seconds later. “Phoebe, I’ve been thinking about our situation. We need to make a plan. We can’t keep wandering aimlessly through this jungle without a goal.” I was grateful she broached the subject and hoped that meant she had some ideas.

“You’re right, Stella. We need a plan. But with everything that’s happened, where do we even start?” “The troll mentioned power beneath the earth,” Avenir said around a mouthful. “The demons mentioned something about a central hub or camp, and I got to thinking maybe the two are connected. It might be worth trying to locate it. That could give us a clearer sense of what’s happening on this island.” “And it could be the key to finding a way off this accursed place.” It was nice to hear the hope in Lorelei’s voice.

We discussed the idea further, our conversation growing animated as we shared our thoughts. Though the situation was perilous, there was a newfound sense of purpose in our group. The discovery of the tide pools had given us more than much-needed sustenance and energy. Together, we would navigate the island’s treacherous terrain and uncover its secrets.

OceanofPDF.com CHAPTER 1 “Are you ready to try and get a look at these babies?” My heart swelled, and tears came to my eyes when Clio asked Aidon and me that question. Hades snapped his fingers, black flames igniting on the tips as electricity crackled over them. “We have been waiting for months. Let’s get this show on the road.” Persephone put a hand on Hades’s arm and smiled indulgently up at her mate.

“Patience, love. We have been waiting for the day we became grandparents for millennia, but these mortals are not in the same position as we are. It has only been a few months since I fed Phoebe the seeds and even less time since we discovered they worked.” Hades blew his breath out in a loud sigh, and his fingers stopped burning and crackling.

“This woman is asking as if we haven’t been anxious since the day that they delivered the ultrasound machine. I told her to do it that day, but she insisted we had to wait another week. People don’t defy me and live long.” I winced and shot pleading eyes to Aidon, who waved a hand in his father’s direction. “You will watch your tone and comments, Father. Or you and Mother can return home without being part of this.
