I suggest you heed the… Guardian’s advice. He is the Guardian of Humanity and our only hope.” The weapons master turned to Chip and bent a knee. The boy’s eyes widened, and he tried to shake his head, but the red- cloaked members followed suit. Xander nodded with a look of realization. “All hail the Guardian of Humanity,” the wizard intoned, bowing low. Chase looked confused, then shrugged and did the same.

The princess stood beside Chip, curtsied, and held his hand. The boy was dumbfounded, looking at an entire room full of people bowing to him. Eleanor tugged his elbow. “Let’s go,” she whispered. “You have to time things for full effect. I will teach you.” She pulled him by the hand, and they walked out and up the stairs. He maintained the shield, having no idea what to expect outside. The others rose and followed. They exited the store and entered the street to find themselves in the middle of a large, milling crowd of people and guards.

Seeing his terrifying red eyes, everyone pressed backwards, giving them a wide berth. Two figures hidden in black cloaks did not. Chip saw a flash of green on either side of him, and he instinctively strengthened his red shield, surrounding them both. Roiling ropes of green magic struck him and the princess simultaneously. The crowd gasped in shock, and several people screamed.

The shield held easily as he lifted a hand to fling a Dark Elf with hurricane force into the top of a stone building on the other side of the street. The body erupted in a fountain of black blood. With his left hand, he released a flow of red magic into the other Dark Elf, who caught fire and crumpled, disappearing into a smoking pile.

Some people passed out in the crowd, while others shouted in amazement. Chip’s companions came out behind him, followed by the ones in red cloaks. Xander maintained his hold on the Power, eyes blazing bright blue. “What is the meaning of this?” a loud, deep voice boomed. Everyone looked for the source. A group of guards stood at one end of the crowd, which had pushed back a good thirty feet, forming a large circle.

“Get out of my way!” They still could not see who was talking. There was a bustle of movement among the guards, and finally, a dwarf pushed through to stand in front of them. “Ah, Scar. To what do we owe the pleasure?” asked Xander, trying to hide his amusement.

He felt a ripple of Power course through his body from a distant source.

A feeling briefly overcame him that he had not experienced in thousands of years. At first, he could hardly identify it. Then, ancient childhood memories surfaced, and he formed the link. The feeling was fear. It was brief and fleeting yet gave him pause. Someone had unleashed an expenditure of magic that should not be possible. It was something only he should have the Power to do. Based on his senses, it came from a source about a week’s journey east. No human or elf was strong enough in all Amrika to create such a disturbance to carry that distance.

The Demon King stood up from his giant throne and walked towards the immense doors at the end of his hall. A servant, intent on catering to whatever whim made his Master rise, foolishly stepped forward without a signal. Without slowing, Killian’s eyes blazed red, and the demon flew sideways with horrific force, slamming into the stone wall of the throne room to disappear in a cloud of black mist.

The other servants lay on their stomachs, mewling with joy that they were in his presence, grovelling at his leisure. The Inner Circle bowed low, daring not to raise their eyes unless called. Typically, dawn signalled rest to prepare for the coming night, but he had been deep in thought on his rock throne, head bowed.

The others waited on his eminence without moving.
