Enigma Zero – Jack Mars

For now, at least. Trent bet he could get them, to loosen up before they parted ways. “The cameras are tested to fifty below,” he told them. “You shouldn’t need to take those apart. As for the rifles, we’ll pack them in the sleeping bags to keep them as insulated as possible.” “You’ll still want a touch of ambergris,” the second sailor said.
“Antarctica has a way of breaking things that aren’t supposed to break.” “Fair enough,” Trent said. “I leave it to your expertise. We haven’t been properly introduced yet, by the way.” He extended a hand. “Agent Talon. I’d tell you my real name, but I’d get in a lot of trouble if my boss found out.” The first sailor took his hand. He spoke with a moderate Irish accent. “You’re really CIA, then?” “‘Fraid so,” Trent replied.
The man nodded. “I’m Finney.” He hooked a thumb at his companions. “Roger and Lars.” Roger nodded. “So what’s going on? I heard a research station was attacked by pirates?” “Something like that,” Trent said. “We’re coming to take the station back.” “What the hell would pirates want with a science camp in Antarctica?” Lars asked. Trent couldn’t answer that question, but he could still tell the truth. “Some people are just evil.” The three sailors exchanged a glance amongst themselves that told Trent they didn’t consider that a satisfactory explanation.
They didn’t press him for more, though. “You ever been to Antarctica before?” Roger asked. “Or anywhere really cold?” “Not like this,” Trent admitted. “I’ve been in some pretty harsh conditions, but not in Antarctica.” “The biggest problem you’re going to run into is fatigue,” Roger explained. “Aye,” Finney agreed. “Your bodies will have to work harder to keep warm than they normally would. That means your heart will beat faster, you’ll get tired faster, and you’ll need to eat more than normal just to keep your energy.
If you move slowly, you can alleviate some of those effects, but the kind of cold we’re looking at, you’ll still have to be careful.” “You can’t overexert yourself,” Lars continued. “I know you’re in a hurry, but you’re not anymore. You understand?” “Got it,” Trent said. The men were lecturing him like he was a child, but they clearly meant well.
