Over on Substack (arguably the Internet’s new watercooler since Twitter/X’s decline) you can’t throw a Margiela Tabi pump without hitting an essay about how to develop good taste, usually illustrated by a photo of Jennifer Lawrence clad in head-to-toe The Row and a mood board replete with Issey Miyake and mid-century Italian furniture. Instead of using the term ‘influencers’, brands and media outlets now routinely refer to ‘tastemakers’.

It seems that taste has become the preeminent online social currency, and even celebrities are getting in on the act – increasingly you’ll find them signalling their good taste (and intellect) by picking esoteric movies in the Criterion Closet (a popular social media series), or through their choice of reading material, à la Dua Lipa’s Service95 platform and Kaia Gerber’s book club, Library Science. Stars such as Kendall Jenner have even been rumoured to employ ‘book concierges’ (yes, that’s really a thing), tasked with making sure they’re snapped stepping off their superyachts with the buzzy literary title du jour in hand – last summer’s book brag was Vincenzo Latronico’s Perfection, whose distinctive navy blue cover you’ll have seen all over your Instagram feed.

These days it’s no longer enough to simply look hot on the red carpet. And yet, for the rest of us, part of this obsession with ‘good taste’ stems from it being that rare status symbol you can flex even if you can’t afford a £1,000 Khaite dress or to spend your summer island- hopping through Greece.

As the internet’s self-appointed tastemongers are fond of reminding us, you don’t need lots of money to show off your good taste – an Instagram carousel of vintage Fran Lebowitz photos, for example, or an artful flatlay of Lena Dunham’s Famesick (this year’s book of the summer) next to a glass of orange wine will usually suffice. This burgeoning cultural obsession is undoubtedly a response to the rise of AI and the tyranny of the algorithm. Good taste is supposedly something only humans can determine, the last bastion against the uncanny feeling that (to quote Donald Trump) ‘everything is computer’, even though, as trend forecaster Emily Segal noted in a widely shared Substack essay, ‘tasteslop’ – the hyper-curated aesthetic of trendy modern- minimalist cultural references – is increasingly being co-opted by those very same tech platforms.
