He knew when her mind was elsewhere, and when her soul was clouded. Rea heard his feet on the sand and the whip of his cloak in the wind. She felt his gaze sear into her as she stroked a lazy hand through the water. His voice was soft as he asked, “Are you ready to talk yet, daughter?”

Her brother was a traitor. Death knew all. He wouldn’t accept anything less. He stood watching her hand swirl through the river swarming with wandering souls and, for once in her life, she saw a heavy shadow over Death’s face. If she dared extend her magic out to him, she was convinced she’d feel something in his soul akin to worry.

“I don’t know what you’re—” Death let out a hiss, power unfurling from him like the eye of a hurricane powering a storm. The air turned heavy, the wind went wild, and Rea held her tongue as Death’s face became contorted, darkened by his more ethereal form. The creature buried underneath his skin writhed. “Do not lie to me, after all I’ve done for you, after all I still do.

Do not forget the bargain we have struck. Do not disgrace my generosity. At least be honest with me. I do not lie. Neither should my daughter.” Rea’s head dipped, the recollection of the night before weighing her body down like lead. She still wore the same clothes. She’d left Night’s island and swiftly returned to her own. She didn’t stop at home. She didn’t see Bree; she hoped a message would suffice. She ignored the blaring of her phone and the thumping of her head.

Nothing made sense. Everything was a contorted blur. “A Dullahan touched me.” Death’s back straightened. “So, I heard. It tried to kill you, Rea. Be more specific.” She rose to sit on her knees. “It touched me, and it burned.”
