I watched her each time mentally calculate how much I was spending on her. Then it was to the jewelry and accessory store. This one had many things for her hair, too. To my astonishment, I had not realized her ears were not pierced. This was not something that Autumn was keen on doing, so instead we opted for hoops designed to go around her ear, and a few had cute chains and charms.

She found bracelets she liked; I convinced her to get some bows for her hair, and we found some necklaces. I hadn’t had this much fun shopping in years. She even picked out some pieces for me that she thought fit my fashion style. She had a good eye. “I cannot believe you talked me into buying all of that,” she groaned as we shoved the bags in my car. “How could I not?

They were all perfect for you, and you have so little.” “You have spent so much money on me.” I stopped, looking at her again, very seriously. “Autumn, I need you to understand now that I have money. Lots and lots of money. It is not an issue. Okay?” “That much, huh?” she asked, quiet. “I have been alive for two centuries, and I was given quite a lot to start with.”

I had just gone to close her door as she sat down, when I heard someone racing up to us. It was midnight, and we were soon to head back to class. Not many people were out, less with good intentions. As they stepped up, I pretended to be taken by surprise, just long enough to slam Autumn’s door, hit their arm up, and knock the gun they were carrying off into the distance.

I quickly twisted their arm behind them, possibly pulling it out of socket as they screamed. I showed my fangs and hissed, “What do you think about your life choices now?” “Please, please. Don’t.” I could hear them sobbing, and smell the acrid notes of pee. They had wet themselves. “I should toss you in the gutter.” I shoved them hard away from the car. “Go.” They took off into the night. I went and picked up the gun, breaking it into small pieces as Autumn came up behind me.

“Are you okay?” she asked. “Yeah. It would have hurt, but it wouldn’t have killed me. Not the first time someone’s tried to rob me. Even knowing there are things that go bump in the night, people can’t help but try and take advantage of a pretty girl or two out in the dark.” She smiled gently, “You let him go.” “He’ll be terrified at least for a while. Come on, we’ve got to get to class.” Autumn stopped me, reaching up to kiss me.

“You’ve a kind soul, Emma.” I wondered how many Vampires had ever been told that. The night was just beginning when I headed to Autumn’s dorm room.
