Fighting For The Alien Bride Lottery – Margo Bond Collins (1)

“Zaxos awaits you,” Frilla sang. Her high-pitched voice rang in my ears as she and Klovik guided me to meet the only Khanavai who had matched with me. I forced a smile, trying to steady my nerves. At least it’s only a luncheon—it’s not like he’s going to try to spank me.
That had been one of the games a few years ago, but it hadn’t gone over very well with the human audience. “Good luck,” Klovik said. The Poltien offered a small nod before withdrawing from the room. I felt alone, but I knew the vid drones hovering in the air were capturing every moment for the Bride Games broadcast.
As I walked toward the table, I noticed the Khanavai’s striking appearance. Zaxos was tall and muscular, his hot-pink skin setting him apart from everyone else I’d ever met. A smile curled across my face. Was this really happening? “Welcome,” Zaxos greeted me, his voice smooth and velvety like melted chocolate. At least he’s handsome. “Hello.” I nodded my own greeting and took a seat opposite him.
Our lunch began with a symphony of flavors, each dish more exquisite than the last. We exchanged pleasantries and shared stories of our lives before the Bride Games. Zaxos spoke of his military accomplishments with quiet pride, and his calm demeanor was soothing in comparison to the chaotic life I had left behind. “Did you know,” Zaxos said between bites, “that computers play a vital role in military strategy? They’re capable of running simulations and predicting outcomes based on data input.”
“Really?” I feigned interest, though my mind began to wander. I’d heard Frankie discuss similar topics countless times—usually when discussing the way the modern Mafia used computers to run territories—and it bored me just as much now as it did then. But something about Zaxos intrigued me, and I found myself wanting to know more about him. “Indeed,” he continued, unaware of my drifting thoughts. “Computers are crucial in developing new tactics and analyzing enemy movements.” As the lunch went on, Zaxos delved deeper into the subject, his eyes alight with passion.
