Once back home, the talk between her mother and sisters centered only on Jane and her time there and Mr. Bingley’s behavior toward her. Elizabeth had to own that she had been paying little attention to Jane and Bingley, and she felt a bit wretched about it, for her sister was obviously excited and had formed an attachment of some sort.

Elizabeth should have been there for her sister, and she had been absent, spending all her time thinking about Oliver. It seemed that Mr. Bingley would be the topic of conversation for some time, but then her father dropped news upon them all that Mr. Collins, the heir to Longbourn, would be coming to visit, and this new bit of news took the attention of everyone. Her mother took rather too much care preparing for his arrival.

At first, Elizabeth could not understand why, but then it dawned upon her that her mother was hoping to entice Mr. Collins into an arrangement with one of her daughters. After the stay at Netherfield, her mother considered Jane as good as engaged, and so Elizabeth knew that it would not be Jane that was thrust into Mr. Collins’s path.

No, it was more likely to be her, as she was the next eldest. This would have been an alarming realization at any point in her life, but now, with Oliver, with his frustratingly vague pronouncement about the future and her somehow being associated with it, she didn’t know what to think at all. She didn’t think she wanted to marry Mr. Collins. Then she met him and she was certain she did not. He was not handsome, but this was the least of her objections to the man.

He was a silly man—but he didn’t realize he was silly. He thought, instead, that he was quite a grave and serious man who had many important observations to express to the world at large. The observations themselves were silly, though he had no notion of it, and he proceeded to make them with such pomp and soberness as to make her wish to laugh.

Indeed, she would have laughed at him if she were not so horrified that he was meant to be her husband. This would never come to pass, and she resolved that the moment he made his intention clear, she would refuse him outright.

OceanofPDF.com CHAPTER ONE IT WAS SUMMER, and Elizabeth Bennet was ten years old. She had spent every other summer of her previous ten years at Longbourn, her home, surrounded by her sisters—of whom there seemed to be an addition every other year—her parents, and the few servants they kept. These summers had been quite acceptable to Elizabeth, having never known anything else. Indeed, she had no notion of what a summer could be elsewhere. She had ventured very little further than a small distance from her home during her entire life.

But this summer proved different, though at first there was no real indication it would be. It began as all other summers begin, with the gradual warmth and greenery and sunlight of early June overtaking the world. And then a sickness began to wind its way through the entire countryside of Hertfordshire. It was odd; sicknesses were rare in the sunny summer, but there it was. Whole households were stricken down with it.

Though it did not seem life threatening, it was a prolonged experience, leaving its victims weakened and bedridden for weeks after the worst of it left them. Mrs. Bennet, Elizabeth’s mother, was intent that the sickness not reach them, and so she began to rather frantically write letters. She wrote to every relation she had, even her newly married brother, Mr. Gardiner, lately settled with his new wife in Derbyshire near her family, and she begged for anyone to take them in so that they might escape the scourge.
