Firefly Magic – Lauren Sapala

I hadn’t started my blog yet and I wasn’t on Twitter either. In fact, I wasn’t on any sort of social media. A lot of people questioned me about this, pretty much all the time. I had friends who were on Facebook all day long and even when I met new people they asked if I was on social media.
A curious thing started to happen, the more people asked me why I wasn’t on social media, the more resistant I felt myself becoming toward it. This was not a huge mystery to me. I have been a private person all my life. I have this really weird introvert vs. mentor thing going on with my energy. One side of me is extremely private. Whenever I feel threatened in any way, I immediately withdraw. I tend not to share my emotions with people until I’ve had at least a few weeks to process them.
I live most of my life in an inner world that no one else ever sees. That’s the introvert side. Then there’s the mentor side, and that side also has a bit of the performer thrown in (more introverts are performer-types than you would guess). The mentor in me loves sharing my personal stories in the hope that they’ll make other people feel not so alone and serve as a connecting bridge between people.
The performer in me will provide all the gory, gritty details to make it a really good story, too. So, I want to share my stories with the whole world. At the same time, I don’t want anyone to look at me. This is why so much resistance showed up whenever I thought about getting on social media.
Well, I decided to give it a go. I signed up for a Facebook account and made a page. That wasn’t so bad, I thought. Next, I found some of my friends and sent them friend requests. That wasn’t so bad either, I chuckled to myself. Maybe I was making too big a deal out of all of this.
