Five Out Of Ten – Icyand Otheremotions

His old friend questioned. “This is bullshit! You could have one of the other guys doing it but no, it’s always me! Do you know how boring this shit is?” Luca didn’t know, in fact, if he was able to control himself, he would have taken the job himself. “I trust you with this,” he said instead. Bobby raised an eyebrow. “I tried to get her killed in a roundabout way – but you trust me to be her stalker?”
He asked bluntly, clearly in disbelief. Luca reached for the envelope and opened it, removing the photos from inside. “I understood the desperation and distress you were under back then…we were all kids.” He cut his eyes to man. “You wouldn’t make the same mistake again.” “How do you know?” Luca met his eyes and smiled, a small breath escaping his nose.
Though he didn’t verbally answer the question, Bobby deflated and looked away as he scratched the back of his head roughly. “Yeah…yeah…” Luca’s eyes returned to the photos Bobby had brought, flipping through the most recent captures of his wife and son. His heart warmed. “Thanks for forgiving us by the way…and everything…”
Bobby mumbled softly. Luca didn’t respond, his friend thanked him near daily for the same thing. Iah had gotten so big, sometimes Luca couldn’t believe it. Seeing his son growing up without him through photos hardly ever failed at making a sense of urgency fill him he always had to smother. His wife, Nessa, she looked more beautiful in each group of photos Bobby brought back but also sadder.
He was at one of the last photos when his hand tightened around the stack. It was one of the last photos, which meant it was one of the most recent taken by Bobby – the man usually spent a month tailing his wife and child and then had the following month off. That meant the photo in question was taken just yesterday, more than likely, or maybe even that morning.
Nessa was standing in front of a store at the local mall where they lived, and she was gazing down at her phone.
This Is What Average Gets You A five out of ten, that had been my score. Average, but he said I was more like ‘slightly’ below average. He claimed to pity me and that was the reason for my extra point. That had gotten a laugh from his friends. The whole school actually had a big laugh about it. Nessa Tyler scores a 5/10, one point for effort.
Above only one of my fellow underclassmen, Sky Banks, in the little senior game. The game? Trick unknowing underclassmen into having sex, then humiliate them by publicly scoring them. Apparently, it had been a tradition at this new school I found myself forced to attend to please grandma, who wanted nothing but the best for me.
Though, I realize looking back, that I should have known better. Why would a guy like Luca Mato be interested in me? Handsome, a popular senior, a star athlete, with all the charisma one would think a guy with his face would have, that type of guy wouldn’t be interested in an awkward, newly transferred junior. Did I mention I have the social skills of a hermit crab?
I was stupid, but worst than that, I was hopeful. I had learned a long time ago that hope was poison, but I had swallowed the pill anyway once again. Like I said, Luca is so charismatic he could talk a nun into becoming a prostitute or a fish into walking on land. He was that good. Or that was what I would keep telling myself to excuse how easily and stupidly I fell for the sweet words he spewed. Though deep down I knew I could not blame it all on Luca.
I had wanted to be hopeful again. I wanted something nice and just for me. I liked the way he looked at me, like I mattered. I had thought maybe new school, a new start? My grandma told me I have to trust people. She had told me that not everyone was bad or out to harm you. I had to be open to receive the good things I wanted.
