Together, Andy and Jan have created a home not just for their family, but for the sacred relics Andy has brought back from treks across Europe and Scandinavia, from flea markets on the edges of small towns. His travels are less about food and wine and more about cathedrals, bone chapels, ossuaries and churches in the middle of nowhere. The objects he has brought home are of wood, stone and metal, worn smooth by centuries of handling and darkened by candle smoke.

Carried through devotion, fear and survival. Once scattered across borders and eras, they are united here, returned to a house of worship where they feel less like artefacts and more like witnesses to the human experience unfolding before them. In close proximity, their presence is cumulative. Histories overlap. If Andy brings the darkness, Jan brings the light. Neither works without the other. It is a marriage of aesthetics.

Jan’s clean lines and luminous spaces allow Andy’s relics to breathe. Light pours in around the suffering, not to erase it but to hold it. A geneticist at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Jan tempers Andy’s fire- and-brimstone aesthetic with restraint, clarity and air. Where Andy collects, Jan curates. Where his pieces speak of punishment and sacrifice, her design opens space for hope.

The building stands vast and open, unapologetically itself. They have spent more than a decade creating what can only be described as a habitat within the church. An intricately carved white marble Pieta depicting Mary holding Jesus after the crucifixion overlooks the kitchen sink where drama and dishes collide.

A late 1700s crucifix stands at the entrance. A forlorn Mary watches > Page left: The chapel has maintained its original high ceilings and exposed timber framing. Pews have been retained and altars repurposed. The work to create and restore was slow and deliberate, devotional in its own way, shaped around weekends and holidays.

Pauses to let life in. The upstairs library holds the very books they collected on their visits over the years. A sunken leather chair offers an invitation to lose oneself in literary greats.
