Then she sat forwards, putting her sunglasses on her head, her green eyes meeting mine. ‘What do you mean?’ ‘I wanted to learn how to fix the sink. He wouldn’t even let me use the spanner.’ ‘You learn from watching, then.’ Putting her sunglasses back on, she reclined.

I didn’t know what to say to that. This was a regular occurrence with Mum. ‘I can do things,’ I said softly. ‘I know you can, John.’ Dad was suddenly beside me, hand on my curls. He looked a little bit sad, probably worried he’d hurt my feelings. ‘You are going to do amazing things that we could never have dreamed of doing, Johnny.’ I looked away; it was like he was praising a toddler who had walked a few steps unassisted.

Dad bent down, lifting my chin, getting me to meet his eyes. ‘Hey,’ he said kindly. ‘You are. Amazing things. I promise.’ All I could do was nod. I could feel heat in my cheeks. He ruffled my hair. ‘I’m going to grab us some chips for lunch.’ ‘Sounds good,’ Mum said. Mum and I sat in silence until the car drove off. Then she stood up, sunglasses abandoned. ‘Come with me,’ she said, tying her hair into a bun.

‘Where?’ She didn’t say anything, and I found myself stumbling after her. Soon, she had me before a small log, about a foot long, with an axe in my hand. ‘Now,’ she said, ‘it’s not like in the movies. You don’t chop wood lengthways, you go top to bottom, ring to ring.’ She took the axe, lifted it and let it fall gently on the log.

Got it?’ She handed the axe to me. ‘Yes?’ She raised an eyebrow at me, very Reggie-like. ‘Got it.’ I gripped the handle of the axe. ‘Good. Let the weight of the axe falling do the work.’ She stepped back. ‘Now go.’ The first hit was pitiful, hardly making a dent. After that, I got the blade stuck in the log more times than I could count. Each time I looked at Mum, she just stood there, arms loosely crossed, calm as anything.

I turned back with renewed determination, and with one heave, finally cleaved the log in half. ‘Good stuff.’ Mum grabbed the halves, chucked them aside and sat a new piece in its place. ‘Now do it again.’ Within half an hour, I was gasping and sweating. I’d tied my jumper around my waist.

Talia is sixteen, pregnant and angry. Her family is broken. She’s looking after her unwell mother. Her dad’s gone. At school she is shunned.
