Forever Rogue – Lisa McMann (1)

The spaces all have hidden triggers.” Sabine pointed out a few secret doors and passageways, and even an entire hidden room that had once been a huge walk-in closet between bedrooms. Now it could only be accessed from a hallway through a false wall. She explained what items covered the hidden doors—a bookshelf, a wardrobe, a display cabinet, an enormous wooden family crest—and how to trigger the doors to open.
Cabot focused on the hidden room, which was central to some of the areas where they’d be fighting if things didn’t go their way in the initial attack. “This room could come in handy if anyone gets into trouble or needs a rest,” Cabot said. Based on past experiences, they all expected things to go wrong.
A lot of things. With Sabine looking on, Cabot began writing up an information sheet with a makeshift drawing of what her teammates should look for if they were in a bind. But before she got too far, she turned abruptly to Sabine. “Do you know where she is?” “Who?” “Your mother.” “Oh!” Sabine seemed taken aback. “No. Not really.” “Do you miss her?” Sabine nodded slowly. “You miss her, but she left you, and that stinks.” Sabine gave a small, tight-lipped smile.
“You would certainly know how that feels.” “Mm,” Cabot said, then shrugged. “Not quite. At least mine didn’t leave me with a monster.” “So much to be thankful for,” Sabine said sarcastically. Cabot laughed. “Maybe when this is all over, you’ll go find her.” “Do you recommend it after all you’ve been through?” “It’s been a lot of work to reconcile with my parents, and it’s not very fun because there are all those bad feelings to deal with.
But yeah…I guess I do recommend it.” Sabine’s smirk faded. “I doubt I’ll go that route. But maybe.” “Why did she leave? I mean, because of your dad?” Fuerte was awful. Who would want to stay? “Yeah, he wasn’t secretly a good guy in private, that’s for sure.” “Why didn’t she take you with her?” “She never told me why. But from sneaking around and listening to the staff gossip, I think it was because my dad wouldn’t let her take me. He got praised by the press for raising me, and my mom got pounded by them for ‘abandoning’ me.
It was a whole big thing. I hated it.” “That’s rough stuff.” Cabot peered at her, concerned. “Are you okay?” “Everybody has rough stuff.” Sabine shifted in her chair. “It was a long time ago. You and I—we’re going to be all right. And now we have stuff to do.” “So true.” Cabot turned back to the hidden room location and wrote precise directions on how to find it so she could send it out to the team. In the front room, Troy, Lada, Seven, Cami, and Viviana were surrounded by enormous open boxes.
Tactical gear in a variety of sizes lined two walls.
