I’ve felt weak before, but never like this. “Ash!” Rys’s voice pierces through the haze, and I can feel her clutching onto me, but I can’t respond, only able to open my mouth just enough to breathe, but even that feels difficult. My eyes close. “Ash!” Her voice is so far away, too far. I release a breath, but don’t inhale another.

“You promised! You promised you wouldn’t die for me! Keep your promise!” My promise. Something heavy lands on my chest, again and again. It’s the only thing I feel. A pounding against my heart, each one coming in harder and harder, faster and faster. But then it stops. Air fills my lungs, and I open my eyes. Slowly, the blackness fades, and my hand finds the hair of the girl whose head is resting on my shoulder.

Rys. Her entire body trembles the moment my fingers weave into her hair. “I’m all right,” I manage to whisper. My other hand finds her fist, clenched tight over the place my heart beats a steady rhythm. “I’m all right,” I repeat, and she raises her head to look at me. She trembles again. “We keep our promises.” I brush away her tears, and she releases a sob. “We’re never doing that again.”

Her voice is raw, thick with pain. I want to agree with her. I want to never put her through that again… only it worked. What she was able to do with that much energy…By the Omri, I can barely believe it. “I didn’t know you could do that,” I murmur, the sight of her levitating off the ground flashing before my eyes.

“That makes two of us.” She grabs my hand, kissing my palm, and a cough interrupts us from behind. We have an audience. Turning, I see Karden, Briar, and Rexen. “Any casualties?” I ask, dreading the answer, the sound of someone screaming still fresh in my mind.

“A few injured, but no deaths,” Rexen reports. “I’m going to help the others bring the Regs to where they want to go.” He turns to Briar and clears his throat.

Anarys (uh-NAR-iss) – a Gifted with the ability to control anything that possesses energy. She is also a direct descendant of the Original Voiden. Rys (Riss) – her nickname. Ash – a full-blooded Voiden, someone who can use the Void to travel, send their thoughts into the minds of others, and transcend to a different realm while they sleep. Briar (BRY-er) – A skilled fighter and a half-blooded Voiden. She’s also Ash’s best friend. The only difference between a full-blood and a half-blood is that the half-bloods cannot send their thoughts to others.

In book one, she was forced from the Voiden camp with the rest of the half-bloods. Coralina (KOR-uh-lean-uh) – A Gifted with the ability to create and control fire. She’s seven and Jareem is the one who trains her. Cobra (KO-bruh) – A Voiden who is one of the Council Elders. Dax – a Voiden who was best friends with Ash and Briar, until he betrayed them. Dax is the reason the Voiden safe havens were found by Elsovor and his Legion.

Many died, including Noxum- Ash’s brother. Elma (EL-muh) – One of the Voiden. She’s a trained healer, and a member of the Council. She’s been in love with Ash for most of her life. Elsovor (EL-suh-vor) – Leader of Alnavara. He was the prince of the kingdom of Hara and over one thousand years ago, the kingdom of Hara merged with the kingdom of Verosee, making him the ruler of the entire continent.

At the age of twenty-one, he took the Eternal Youth Elixir. He will never age another day. His main goal is ridding the land of all Voiden. Fiora (fee-OR-uh) – The sister of Ash’s deceased mother, making her Ash’s aunt by blood. A few years after the last great battle, she married Karden.
