Gamekeeper The Systems Huntsman 1 – Nikolai Skiba

Somewhere in the distance, birds called to one another and leaves whispered in the gentle breeze. The air carried the scent of pine, damp earth, and something else entirely — an aroma that was unfamiliar, but not unpleasant. I drew in a deep breath and stepped beneath the welcoming canopy of trees, instantly feeling at home. “Don’t let me down, old friend,” I murmured, letting the crisp air fill my lungs. The forest embraced me with its coolness and twilight ambiance. Sunlight filtered through the dense branches in scattered beams, creating a dance of light and shadow on the ground.
Dry leaves crunched beneath my feet, and the resilient moss bounced back like a soft cushion. I paused and scanned my surroundings. This was my dominion. I was the master here. My gaze began to discern the finer details: over there, beside the birch, the bark lay scraped away — evidence of a deer wearing down its antlers. The fresh color of the wood told me it must have been recent. Not far off, hoof prints marked the soft earth, leading toward the stream.
Sizable — an adult male, no doubt. Continuing on, I noticed flattened grass. A trail. But it was too narrow to have been made by human feet; the vegetation was pressed down in a way that suggested roe deer. They frequented this path — it was well-worn. The wind, light but persistent, blew from left to right.
I would need to account for it as I moved, as the creature could detect a human scent from a hundred yards away. I sensed that the area was safe, but the tracks before me remained a mystery — were they from ordinary beasts or enchanted ones? It was all relative — after all, Handsome could scratch your face off, too.
The elder ensured his granddaughter was accompanied by a guard even in safe zones, despite her having a Star Wolf. I inhaled again, noting another scent mingling in the air — metallic, with a subtle sweetness. Magic? Could be. Fragments of knowledge from Max’s memory emerged, recalling that the air in the forests had altered after the Rift. It felt… richer in some way.
But still, forest was forest, bound by certain laws and principles. Only its inhabitants had changed, and maybe their behavior. After all, one creature had already tricked me. I had much to learn. I made my way toward the oak with a split crown, moving slowly to absorb every detail of my surroundings.

It was July. And the taiga in July, well, let me tell you — it’s not just a forest. It’s a living thing. And it’s all mine. The air smelled of pine needles and resin, and crickets chirped somewhere far off, interrupted by the occasional birdcall.
