Generous MFF Romance Curious Series Book 5 – Jess Savage

No doubt the speech he gave would heavily focus on how Hailey had been a lifeguard at Rolling Green, and that every Rolling Green guest was protected by the absolute tops in life protection when their kids swam at the pool. Plus, Rolling Green had taken a hit, gossip-wise, when Dad had tried to revoke Jack’s scholarship. Dad lowered his voice. “I wanted to clear it with you first.” “Wh…what?” Dad gave me a sympathetic, almost pitying shrug.
“I’m not dense. I know she’s dating Jack and that she’s been over to the house a few times. You know her as a person. So I wanted to know if you’re OK with her getting the scholarship, and you know… if she’s the kind of person Rolling Green can be proud to represent.” I bit my lip. Dad had made a misstep in trying to revoke Jack’s scholarship and had gotten some bad word-of-mouth about it, and I could tell he was trying to repair his image.
Going out on a limb for Hailey was a little nerve-wracking, espe- cially because she didn’t seem too interested in staying in the closet. This was my father’s business, and he had fierce feelings about how he protected Rolling Green’s image. His values were homophobic and sometimes sexist, but they were clear. Honestly, those values were probably what some of the Rolling Green crowd spent money to be a part of. I nodded. “Dad, she’s terrific. She’s a good person.
I was there. Did you know it was Lucas’s sister she saved? Lucas from the Snack Shack.” “What were you doing at Music in the Park?” Typical Dad. “Scouting for music groups,” I lied. “There are some up-and-com- ing bands in town that might be good for live bands at some of the club’s receptions.” “Huh.

The fairytale, Happily Ever After, impossible ones you tell your- self late at night, to block out the scary sound of your mother crying because Dad’s been gone for over a month and you are both coming to terms with what should’ve been clear from the start: he’s not com- ing back. Mom is single, and you are not Daddy’s Little Girl any- more, and maybe you never really were, because he left, even when you begged him not to.
In the beginning, the dream keeps fear away with its simple, pure promise: One day someone will love you and never leave. It gets more detailed over the years. As you grow, so does it: someone not only loves you, but they help pay the rent so you don’t have to move again. They don’t sneak out the back door before dawn. They never say things like, “You knew what this was from the start.” Your whole life, you think that the dream is happiness.
If you keep the faith, your life will become a magical fairy tale, and you will be transported to a lifetime of joy. You never think to ask the question: What happens if you get your dream, and there’s still something missing? Someone missing? If you get what you’ve always wanted, and you’re still not happy, what do you do then? That was the thought flitting uneasily around in my head as Jack and I wandered through Music in the Park.
