Gently Yours Gently Series Book 1 – Sweetblunch

“Did something good happen, sweetheart?” I poured myself coffee. “Nope. Just slept well last night.” Dad grunted something that might have been a greeting, but Mom wasn’t letting up. “Really? Because you’re glowing, Josie.” I almost choked on my sip. “Mom!” “What? I’m just saying. You’ve been dragging yourself out of bed all week, and now suddenly you’re smiling at the eggs like they’ve told you a love story.”
I ducked my head, pretending to focus on buttering my toast while my cheeks felt like they’d caught fire. “Maybe I’m just in a good mood. Is that a crime?” Mom laughed softly. “Not at all, dear. I’m just glad about that. Oh, before I forget, Josie. Your sister called this morning. She tells me to remind you about her bachelorette party.” I blinked. “Her what?” “The bachelorette,” Mom repeated cheerfully.
“She said you haven’t gotten back to her yet about the plans.” My fork paused halfway to my mouth. “Plans?” Mom turned to look at me, brow arching as if this should be obvious. “Josie, you’re the maid of honor. It’s your job to organize it. She wants it to be a surprise, of course, but she said to make sure it’s something classy.” My stomach dropped like I’d swallowed a stone.
“Oh, no,” I whispered under my breath. “No, no, no.” Mom chuckled. “What’s wrong?” “I can’t. I don’t even know what to—” I stammered, setting down my fork. “Mom, I’ve never even been to a bachelorette party before. I have no idea what people even do at those things besides drink too much and wear matching shirts.”
“Well,” she said, stirring her coffee like this was the most casual conversation in the world, “then I suppose you’d better start figuring it out. Maybe Sierra or Amber could help you plan.” I stared at her with disbelief. “How can I impose on my friends?” She gave me one of those knowing smiles. “Just a suggestion, dear.” I slumped back in my chair, staring at the pancakes I no longer had an appetite for. A bachelorette party for Morgan.

She was the kind of girl everyone noticed. The one with the bright smile that could easily make everyone fall under her spell. With her golden hair caught in the sun, it shone like she was an angel on earth. She also had the confidence I only wished to have. Next to her, I was simply the ugly duckling.
Morgan’s little sister. The shy one. The awkward younger sister who no one bothered to look at twice. Despite this, I still possess a heart, and for as long as I can remember, my heart has belonged to Wade Blackwood. He was my neighbor. The handsome young man with dark hair and warm eyes. His laugh alone could make my stomach flutter.
Morgan used to tease him as a scrawny cowboy. Whenever Wade was in our house, my sister never bothered to hide her disdain for him. For some reason, she hates him. I didn’t understand her reason for her dislike of Wade. He was the nicest guy I knew. Even if when I tried to speak to him and my words would always get stuck somewhere between my ribs and my throat, he still hung out with an awkward girl like me.
I got content with every stolen glance I gave him, every act of small kindness he gave me, as if they were treasures meant only for me. He was my everything. I was sixteen when his family packed up and left Oakridge in exchange for a life in the city. I remembered that I stood by my bedroom window that morning they left, watching the dust rise behind their truck.
I was certain that something precious slipped from me forever. I told myself it was a silly thought. Boys like Wade didn’t belong to girls like me. Yet I never stopped loving him. And now, after all these years, I heard the news I was waiting for all my life. Wade is finally coming home. Yes, that’s right.
