Grace In The Flames – Michelle Massaro (1)

He shot her a half-cocked smile, then opened his mouth to retort just as the server interrupted to deliver her juice. “Cheers.” Jenni quenched her suddenly parched throat then redirected the conversation. “So do you have any hobbies? Besides handyman stuff?” He nodded. “Basketball. Pacers all the way, baby.” She wagged a finger. “Oh, no. You’re in California now. Time to switch to the purple and gold.” “Not gonna happen. A Pacers fan wouldn’t be caught dead rooting for the Lakers. So you’d better get used to it now.”
Had she? She smiled at the thought, then held her hands up in mock surrender. “Okay, okay. I can see you need more time. Do you play too?” “Derek and I do a little one-on-one now and then and he’s trying to get a few guys together to play once a week. We’ll see how that goes. Should be a good time—for me anyway. I always smoke him.” He raised one muscled arm up over his head and mimicked a jump shot.
Suddenly all Jenni could think about were those strong, masculine arms encircling her, holding her close. She felt the flush in her cheeks and met his eyes to see if he’d noticed. His sly smile told her he had. Busted. She’d been cursed with tell-tale cheeks—they always gave her away. She rubbed a hand over her throat and tried to recover. “So, what are your plans for the summer?
There’s tons you probably want to see— Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm. Do you like roller coasters?” “Love ’em. I used to drag Hannah to Holiday World any chance I got.” His gaze went soft, distant. “She couldn’t stand coasters, but I made her ride them anyway.” He breathed a laugh and Jenni’s stomach knotted. She pasted on a smile and busied herself running her fingers up and down through the condensation on her glass.
“Maybe the San Diego Zoo instead. It’s always been one of my favorites.” “Yeah, sounds great. And maybe I can get you to a basketball game.” “I’d be rooting for the Lakers.” “A little rivalry could be fun. I won’t judge.” She laughed, her uneasiness evaporating. “Gee, thanks.”
After their breakfast, he paid the check and guided her out the door with a palm on the small of her back. Once outside, he took her hand. “If you have an hour to spare, there’s something I want to do.” She stopped while he got out his keys. “Like what?” “You’ll see.” He released Jenni’s hand for her to climb into the car, then waited till she was safely settled to close her door.
When they pulled up to their destination a few minutes later, Home Depot was the last place she expected to see.
“Grace in the Flames is a beautiful, heartrending depiction of God’s love and grace. The characters’ struggles, mistakes and pain were achingly real and God’s faithfulness was the path-lighting ember in each of the characters’ journeys. This is an emotionally evocative and profoundly moving tale of mistakes redeemed and lives intertwined in a divine tapestry of grace and hope.
Highly recommended.” — Cheryl Wyatt, USA TODAY bestselling author of award-winning Wings of Refuge series. “Michelle Massaro’s distinctive voice captivates and enthralls in this outstanding debut novel.
