Healing Her Heart A Sapphic Ranch Romance – Annie Wiest

Not panic. Something else. *** On the drive back, adrenaline receded, leaving that clean exhaustion she could almost taste. She flexed her fingers again, the last of the pins fading. “The way you were in there… so certain,” Alex said into the quiet. Her profile was all clean lines and sun-skimmed skin. “You never once doubted.” She gave a tired, wry smile. “David would have called that my ‘steamroller’ mode.”
Alex reached across the console, covering her hand. Her thumb stroked the tendon as if soothing a spooked animal. “It was beautiful.” The tenderness in those words made her chest tight. She kept her eyes on the road. “Can I say something?” Her hands tightened on the wheel. “Of course.” “This is fast. Really fast.” She forced herself to keep going. “Only days ago, I didn’t know you existed. Now I’m canceling appointments just to see you. I’m thinking about you during surgery.”
“Is that a problem?” “I don’t know.” Emily swallowed. “What if this burns out as fast as it started? What if I’m feeling all of this and then…” She couldn’t finish. The fear sat heavy in her body. “Do you want it to work?” Alex’s voice was steady. The question landed direct and unavoidable. “Yes,” she said. The word came out sure. “I want it to work. That’s what scares me.” “Then maybe we let it be scary,” Alex said quietly.
“Maybe we let it be fast. And maybe…” She squeezed Emily’s hand. “Maybe time doesn’t determine truth. Maybe truth is just… true. The moment it arrives.” She felt her jaw soften. She turned her hand over and laced their fingers together. Alex’s palm fit against hers perfectly. “So,” Alex said, the playful curve returning to her mouth. “When my girlfriend saves a foal this morning, does that mean I buy her lunch?”
The word landed in her body first: her forearms tightening, then loosening as her breath deepened. Alex’s eyes flicked over briefly, and there, a quick shuttered flash: risk, and choosing it anyway. Bravery wasn’t loud with Alex; it was this quiet ask. “Yes,” Emily said, meeting it. “It is. And yes, you’re buying.” “Green chile from El Gallo?” “Extra.” She tipped her head back against the seat and let out a laugh she couldn’t swallow back. “And a sopapilla. I earned it.”
Back at the ranch with their take away, the sun warmed the fence lines, turning the dust to glitter.
