She bore the cuts and bruises of her battle, but she refused to show any discomfort. “We will honor the fallen, and celebrate their deeds, for now this monster shall no longer terrorize our people.” She turned to Torin and Ruxandra and, in a mark of respect for their culture, bowed to them. “And we shall honor you also, for this day would not be ours without your sword and your bow,” the Horse Maiden added.

They stood a while, watching the villagers return and began cutting up the Adynach. As Torin had learned, the thraul’s organs and bones could be used to make powerful elixirs. Not a scrap of the monster would go to waste. It was little consolation. “Now, a bargain is a bargain,” Ingrid said, turning to them again. “I shall guide you to Frostspire Fort, as promised.

I have a sister there, and it would be good to see her.” She placed her hands on both of their shoulders and added firm pressure. Despite her aching muscles, she pressed her back straight and stood tall. “But mark this, bow maiden and princeling. When you are done seeking penguins, know that you are welcome again in Hestheim at any time.

We have drunk together, and bled together. You are as kin to me now.” They embraced as Hestvakt warriors. Then Ingrid gathered their horses, and prepared her riders for the return to Hestheim. And from there, to the edge of the known world. OceanofPDF.com Chapter 18 Jonett’s Arrival he rhythmic pull of the ship’s oars splashing in the water was soothing.

So too was the wind washing over Natesh’s face, cool and fragrant with the promise of summer on the horizon. It was a season that would normally bring much relief and joy as the harshness of winter was finally left behind and long, warmer and easier days lay ahead.

But this would be a summer of change. A summer when kings and queens fell and a new order arose. Holy Padmalor was directly ahead, nestled between the Sacred Peaks and the Saint’s Lake. There was no more beautiful city. As one who held a great fondness for Silverspire in her home realm of Dyreth, she felt this without resentment.

Her horse brayed and shook her head, the animal’s hooves slipping and sinking into the mud, forcing Evangelus to weave a chaotic path through the Fell Fen of the Pariah. Like the Penitent Mountains, the fen was a place fit only for the damned. Clinging to the eastern boundary of the realm, it was a boggy swampland of stinking waters, towering reeds, and undulating hills, behind any one of which could lurk a gang of heretics and criminals.

It was the last place in Westskyr the High Justicar would choose to be. Yet here she must remain. Honor demanded it of her. Speaking soothing words to her destrier, Evangelus steered the animal toward a drier patch of ground and kicked her heels, encouraging the powerful horse to climb the steep hill. At the top, her view across the fen was barely any clearer than from the marshes below, but at least she was no longer mired in mud and festering bog water.

The stink of the place clung to her nose and left a bitter taste on her tongue. Why any pariah would choose to flee their enforced exile in the Penitent Mountains to scratch out an existence here was a mystery to her.
