Heavy Duty – Issue 205 MarchApril 2026 – Heavy Duty

The ergonomics of the Sport Chief are good, the seat to bar reach leans your upper body forward which is part of the sport look and feel. Foot pegs are placed well and easy to reach and use. Seat height is 695mm, with a seat that is thick and a plush design because of the chassis shape. It is very comfortable and a cool design. The foot controls are very nicely styled with a slim design that offers functionality and adjustment to meet rider’s needs, simple but smart.
The dash on the Chief is a 4” unit that offers different screen displays, GPS navigation, Bluetooth and other ride features. Navigating the screens and functions through the switch blocks was simple and easy. The dash was easy to see and the screen I liked was the multi display with analogue displays on a white background, very nice and easy to read at a glance. The switch blocks are functional and do the job fine, matched to the ribbed hand grips and levers it all works well and look good too.
The mirrors also offered good vision. Paul’s two cents… • Mufflers for a bit of noise The paint work only comes in two colours, Black Smoke or Heavy Metal which is the test bike colour, get it in the sun and it has a real metal flake to it that adds to the custom feel of this model. Paint quality is good with excellent shine and depth to the paint. The graphics are smart and styled right for this Sport Chief RT. A better selection of colours would be nice though.
There are also some very smart alloy wheels sporting Metzeler Cruise Tec tyres, these are a quality tyre and offered good feel and performance over the test period. Stopping power is excellent with 320mm rotors up front with radial-mounted Brembo four-piston calipers, and a single 298mm rear rotor with a twin piston caliper to pull up the Sport Chief. The brakes were very good! The saddle bags, hmmm, I know Indian needed to do something different from the other brands, but I just can’t get comfortable with the look of these bags.
The shape is very boxy; they look too wide when looking at the bike from behind as well. They do carry 37 litres of gear which is great but at a cost to the styling and look.
