At least, he consoled himself, she wasn’t pulling away. For now, he’d simply have to enjoy holding her in his arms. She surprised him by saying, “Just pray for me, Sir.” “I will gladly do more than that, if you ever allow me. But yes, in the meantime I will pray.” He placed his lips to the top of her head as his eyes drifted closed. He could feel the steady beat of her heart against his chest and he was loathe to let her go.

He hadn’t paid his devotions to the Lord or said his prayers since he was but a lad, but for her, he’d gladly do it. He wasn’t certain how long they stood there, for the moment felt like an eternity and a mere blip of time at all once. When she pulled back to look into his face, he could not help but notice the sincere plea in her eyes. “Thank you for not forcing the issue, or me.”

His voice was husky with emotion as he responded, “I hope you know I would never force you to do or say anything against your will. It would not benefit either one of us. If, at some future point, you decide you are ready to divulge your pain to me, I would be honored to listen and to share in your sorrow.

For the time being, I will have to be content to remain uninformed. However, if and when you decide you want to confide in me, do not come to me as Mr. Graham, your employer, come to me as Marcus, a man who very much desires to see you happy and will do all within my power to see that it is so.”

“Oh, that all men were as noble as you,” she said with a sad smile before adding bluntly, “But they are not.” “No, they are not, and neither are all women. Though I cannot change that sad fact, I can endeavor to convince you that I am different.” “I am different too. I would never have treated you like Cecelia did. I could never live with myself if I were to cause you such pain.” “Of course you are different,” he said with conviction as he tenderly stroked her cheek.

OceanofPDF.com Prologue Paris, France Reaching for the decanter of brandy he had conveniently set on the side table next to the sofa he was stretched out upon, Marcus put the bottle to his lips as he lifted his head high enough to be able to take a long swallow without choking.

At this very moment Cecelia was giving birth to their first child, and the thought was making him dreadfully nervous. Replacing the half empty decanter back on the table, Marcus let his head fall back and his eyes drift closed. It had been not quite a year since he had arrived in France, intentionally fleeing England to avoid the bothersome meddling of his best friend Benedict and his wife Gillian.

He had intended his visit to be brief, but Cecelia had changed all that. Thinking of his wife made a sickening feeling form in the pit of his belly. The woman who had charmed him with a sultry smile had proven to be the worst mistake of his life. He had been foolish to think her pretty face and flirtatious manner would be enough to base a relationship upon. Part of him had been flattered by the French beauty’s attention when it was clear several gentleman were vying for her affections, while another part of him had been quick to assert his independence and prove that he was perfectly capable of selecting his own wife.

Marcus scoffed out loud as he ran one hand angrily through his unkempt hair. What a fool he had been! He would have been better off staying in England and letting Benedict choose his wife, he thought bitterly as his wife’s disdain rushed to his mind, though he would never let his friend know that.
