I had Onyx saddled again, and since I wanted to teach her, Elara rode with me again. Not that I minded. She sat in front of me, her weight light but impossible to ignore. Every shift of her body sent a ripple through mine. Her hair danced against my chin, and when I leaned forward to adjust her hold on the reins, my hand grazed hers.

She didn’t pull away. My men flanked us at a distance, respectful and silent. They knew to give us space. When we found the herd near the ridge, I showed her how to track the strongest stag, the signs of dominance, the prints, the way it moved. She listened intently, biting her lip in concentration. Gods help me, that lip would be the death of me.

We trailed the prey quietly, moving through the underbrush until we had a clean shot. I handed her a smaller bow. She glanced at me, brows raised. “You trust me not to shoot you?” “No,” I said dryly. “I trust myself to move fast if you do.” She smothered a laugh, then lined the shot. I helped steady her hand, our bodies pressed close as I whispered, “There.

Breathe with it.” The arrow loosed clean and fast. She hit it in the flank. I finished the job with a throw of my knife. It was clean. Quick. Respectful. My men moved in to retrieve the kill. “Take it back to the kitchens,” I said. “Have it prepared while they wait for Luna Elara.”

“Yes, Alpha,” they replied before disappearing through the trees. We were alone. The woods felt quieter now. Sacred. Elara turned to me, flushed with adrenaline. “That was… exhilarating.” “You did well,” I said, meaning it. She grinned, pushing her hair behind her ear. “Thank you for letting me come.”

“I didn’t let you,” I said. “I wanted you here.” Her smile faltered for the briefest second, but the look in her eyes stayed. I nudged Onyx forward again, steering him toward a familiar path that branched off to the east. “Where are we going?” “To the lake.” We arrived at a small lake. The water was calm, reflecting the sky like glass. The trees swayed gently at the banks, and soft moss coat- ed the rocks.

This book is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to persons, living or dead, or places, events or locations is purely coincidental. Created with Vellum OceanofPDF.com T PROLOGUE DRAVEN he fire crackled in the hearth, casting flickering shadows across the room as Lyra darted around the table, her laughter ringing like silver bells. She flashed me a triumphant grin, my stolen steak clutched in her hand, and I couldn’t help but smirk. “No!” she protested, already anticipating my retaliation. I leaned back in my chair, feigning indifference. “What did Mother say about playing while eating?”

“That won’t make me sit beside you,” she shot back, eyes sparkling with mischief. “I know you’ve got something planned.” “I’m not going to deny it.” She gasped in mock outrage. “Mother! Father! Tell Draven to back off!” Our parents exchanged an amused glance, their laughter warm and indulgent. My father, the fearsome Alpha of the Silvershadow Pack, looked nothing like the ruthless leader he was in this moment—just a man enjoying dinner with his family.

My mother’s joy was infec- tious, her smile lighting up the room. For a heartbeat, I wished this could last forever. Then, without warning, the air turned frigid. My father froze, his fork suspended mid-air. His eyes glazed over, his body rigid as if seized by an unseen force. The playful banter died in my throat. Lyra’s smile faltered.

“Father?” No response. My mother reached for him, her voice trembling. “Alaric?” But the man before us was no longer my father. His grip tightened around her wrist, his fingers digging into her flesh. A low, guttural growl rumbled from his chest, and my blood turned to ice.

I lunged forward. “Let her go!” My fists pounded against his chest, but he didn’t flinch. His gaze locked onto mine, empty yet filled with something monstrous. “Run!” my mother gasped, her voice strained. “Take Lyra and go!” I couldn’t. I wouldn’t. The snap of bones echoed through the room as his body twisted, his human form giving way to the beast beneath. My mother shifted in a blur of fur and fangs, throwing herself between us and the monster that had once been her mate.
