It’s been a while since I’ve visited the city,” he shrugged. I followed his directions, taking the right when more police sirens sounded. “They know we’re in the city now. It’ll be much harder to lose them,” Mr. Tenner said. “Here! Pull over here!” I skidded the car to a stop, the five of us all jumping out. “Put on these,” Alex said, stuffing hoodies into her dad, Jack, and Sam’s hands.

“You all look like you just came from prison.” “Follow me,” Mr. Tenner said, moving swiftly down a back alley. We followed as he reached a door, swinging it open and whispering, “Avert your eyes, kids,” before walking inside the building. We filed in after him, walking through a seedy club with provocative dancers. “Eyes up front, Jessie,” Alex commanded.

Her dad chuckled. “Through here!” he whispered, ushering us through another door leading into a new alley. “Where the hell are we going?” I asked. Mr. Tenner led us back out onto the street, running across it as sirens still sounded close, and heading into an underground garage. “Just as I left it,” Mr. Tenner smiled.

He ran up to a white BMW, the kind I could maybe afford if I didn’t eat for a decade or two. “We’re supposed to be laying low, dad,” Alex hissed. “We are. You kids have a lot to learn,” he chuckled, reaching up and taking a key from the top of a pipe hanging off the ceiling. He climbed into the driver’s seat, Sam entering the passenger’s. Alex, Jack, and I squished into the back. The car’s dashboard was more advanced than Sing Sing.

“How did no one realize this was sitting here for almost two years?” Alex asked. “Money’s a useful incentive,” her dad responded, putting the car in reverse and exiting the garage. “Oh, it’s nice to be back behind the wheel.” “Sorry, Mr. Tenner, but how many cars like this do you have around the city?” Sam asked. “New York? Seven others. And don’t call me Mr. Tenner, Wes is fine.” “Well, Wes,” I began.

Stick to the plan!” “Frankly, I’m uncomfortable with the plan!” “If we don’t do this, we could get caught. If we get caught, we die.” “I know the extremity of the situation, Alex.” My friend groaned in frustration. “Just let me cut your freakin’ hair!” You see, we were in a bit of a pickle.

Now, I have already explained everything up to this point of my story, but I get not everyone can be bothered to go revisit it, so let me give you the rundown: My father and I went skydiving, but his chute didn’t open when he pulled the ripcord. He died. It messed me up pretty bad. So bad, in fact, that I developed a, what I would say understandable, but some are calling irrational, fear of heights. Every time I was a foot off the ground, I’d be fighting back a panic attack.

Then, six months later, my friends and I were at a pier, when I was pushed off. I was absolutely terrified as I fell, when unexplainably, I stopped. I could fly. Then a military guy I call “Crew Cut” (because he has a crew cut; see, I can be creative) found out about my power and kidnapped me. He took me to an “Academy”, where I quickly found out there were others like me, all with powers that somehow reminded them of the most traumatic experience of their life.

Apart from the fact that we were kidnapped and forced to use the powers that we hate, the Academy was messed up. They pitted us against each other in barbaric games, a term which I use loosely, and they would beat up kids for just sneaking out at night. Like, break their bones. While at the Academy, I had these cryptic dreams that told me to “join the four” and “find the list”.
