Holy Knit – Deborah Alexander

Leaning back in the patio chair I toss the question out haphazardly. Eyes on my phone screen we’ve been talking about names for him all through the shower and into our dinner on the patio. The sun is almost set and I’ve got to light the citronella candle soon, but I’m so comfortable all curled up in the chair that I’m not ready to move yet.
“Maybe…” Shrugging his shoulders I can tell it’s not going on the short list of names he likes and I wonder how long he’s going to be here for. Ever? Is that too much to hope for? Probably. “So I found one I really like but you might not like it…” His hand squeezes my free hand where it lays on the arm of my chair. “Tell me?” Eyebrows pulling together he leans in and I know he’s giving me his full attention.

“It does fit my hair.” Nodding, I wait with bated breath for him to say ‘nah’ or ‘that’s dumb’ something Jaxton would have very quickly tossed at me but instead he looks out across the apartment complex parking lot and seems to consider it thoughtfully. “I like it. Grayson.” Turning to me with a big smile he nods affirmingly and I slowly let out the breath I’ve been holding.
Holy shit. He likes it. I hadn’t even considered he’d like what I suggested. Blinking, I smile back up at him and whisper the name again. “Grayson.” “I have a name, it feels so real. For a long time, I just watched over you and couldn’t do anything to help but now that I’m here you’re never going to be alone again.” “What?

Or is it a slip stitch? Fuck, I’m gonna have to restart the whole video again just to see what the woman was doing with her fingers. Pulling the video back with my finger, I absentmindedly pick Oscar up and give him a warm cuddle before casting him off the couch to do whatever it is cats do when they aren’t bothering the shit out of their owners.
I’m pretty sure it’s just licking their ass and a whole lot of nothing but boy did he make himself known the minute I brought out Grandma’s knitting basket. I’ve been meaning to learn how to knit for years and she tried to show me how. She was so patient before she got too sick to be able to hold the needles in her delicate hands. Just thinking about how Grandma Dotty used to sit in her high-back recliner and knit for hours on end brings tears to my eyes.
