She marched before them with her arms crossed. But it was the frown on her face that gave Daniel a shiver. Evelyn’s eyes narrowed. She stared at the boys. Finally, she spoke. “Why are boys so predictable? I told the general you would come up through the sewers. And look at you! I was right. I bet you almost couldn’t help yourselves, could you? You probably fooled yourselves into thinking the sewer was the least likely way anyone would suspect you to enter.

But not for human boys it isn’t!” Evelyn circled around them. A critical eye scanned them up and down. “Mucking through the dirt and the filth—it’s almost like you went out of your way to play in it, didn’t you? Any other intruder would have chosen any of the other options!” Daniel swallowed hard. Somehow, this was not the greeting he’d been hoping for when he imagined running into Evelyn again.

Wasn’t Evelyn working on their side? What happened? Did she switch loyalties again? With spite written across her face, Evelyn leaned in close and whispered, “How. Predictable.” Then she did something that surprised Daniel. Made him gasp. She winked at him. It was a quick movement. One that could have been easily missed. And Evelyn spun away. Hold on—was this all a ruse? Evelyn marched a few steps away and unclipped the laser pistol in her holster. In her stern voice, she continued.

“And now what are we going to do with you? The general wants me to bring you back. He wants the pleasure of dispatching you himself. But that’s going to be troublesome. Just smell them!” A few Luta guards obeyed, leaning in and sniffing the boys. “And why should I be denied that pleasure for myself? Especially after what you did last time!” Daniel’s brain raced. All he could remember was that they had left with a promise to come back and help her.

Had that been lost in translation? Maybe Evelyn didn’t understand their intentions. She couldn’t really think that they had abandoned her . . . could she?! “What if I tell General Dis that there was an accident?” Evelyn said, her voice now silky smooth. “Yes. An unfortunate one, of course.” She pulled her pistol out and held the barrel aloft. “I’ll say that when the two prisoners made a break for it, we simply had no other options.”

Evelyn smiled. But she did it in such a way that only a truly evil person can smile. Daniel’s head spun. Was that a clue? Or a death sentence?! “Guards, lower your weapons,” Evelyn said. “These two are all mine!” She added with a twisted laugh.

It’s adventurously expectant, greeting God with a childlike “What’s next, Papa?” God’s Spirit touches our spirits and confirms who we really are. We know who he is, and we know who we are: Father and children. And we know we are going to get what’s coming to us—an unbelievable inheritance! We go through exactly what Christ goes through. If we go through the hard times with him, then we’re certainly going to go through the good times with him!”

Romans 8:15-17 (MSG) OceanofPDF.com 1 THE WORLD WAS LOST. It had slipped through their hands. Had it been the right course to take? It was hard to know. To keep the Caslon jar out of General Dis’s hands—maybe it was worth it. Maybe Lucas had done the right thing by dumping it into the laundry chute back there in the prison. But Daniel couldn’t help second-guessing it. He had promised the ambassador he would look after the Earth, protect it. And now where was it? Nobody knew. Probably off marinating in a mountain of stinky laundry.

Daniel stared up at the ceiling of the Moses, unable to sleep. Out of sheer boredom, he was about to press a random button on a side panel when— K-THUNK. Outside, metal struck metal. The Moses vibrated.
